in Beesd, the Nether- lands, in 2008 can be seen as a huge break- through of the Dutch harness horse in the international combined driving sport. Almost half of the competing horses were KWPN- bred and one in four was registered as a KWPN harness horse. After the overwhelm- ing success of these horses in Beesd, the KWPN influence at the World Champion- ships for four-in-hand driving in Kentucky
2010 can also be called impressive as the top three drivers on the podium all used Dutch horses in their team, including overall winner Boyd Exell of Australia. Excellence in the harness is why American flagship driver Chester Weber also chooses to drive all KWPN teams.

Increasingly, North American-bred KWPN horses are making their mark on the international competition scene. Te charismatic stallion Judgement-ISF (Consul x Faletta by Akteur) showed North American breeders what’s possible by becoming the first domestically-bred winner of the $1,000,000 CN International at Spruce Meadows. Tat was just one of his many international show jumping victories with Beezie Mad- den. He represented the United States on ten Nation’s Cup teams, including the gold medal winning team at CSIO La Baule in 2008 and Hickstead in 2007. When he retired sound

porting Chance Farm is located on 16 scenic acres in Coatesville, Pennsylvania and has been home to the KWPN breeding operation of Dr. Carlos and Karin Jimenez for 23 years.
Carlos is an equine veterinarian, and he and Karin have two teenage sons, Ryan (17) and Alex (15), who hope to carry on the family legacy of breeding top quality KWPN horses in the future. Their success in breeding an impressive lineup of international-quality show jumping pros- pects earned them the 2006 KWPN-NA Breeder of the Year award. How did you become involved with the Dutch Warmblood breed? In the 1980s, we had a very high quality Canadian Thoroughbred Sport Horse mare that we
were researching stallions and registries for, and we were impressed with the keuring system and the opportunities that the KWPN-NA system offered. We decided to breed her to Wanroij at DG Bar Ranch, and then took her to keuring where she was accredited. That mare pro- duced many keuring and show champions, and began a dynasty of excellent daughters and producers. What makes the Dutch Warmblood breed special for you? Definitely the stringent quality control and the “open studbook” policies, which allow us to use top quality stallions of (select) other

breeds, in order to bring in traits that we might be looking to “add in” to our breeding program. The other thing that keeps us loyal to the KWPN, is the network of breeders, who have now become our friends. What are the goals of your breeding program? Producing KWPN horses that are first successful through the KWPN keuring system, then at the top levels of the sport in jumping,
eventing and even dressage. We take great pride in the KWPN predicates that our horses have earned, including three preferent mares, three keur mares, and numerous ster mares and colts/geldings. We have multiple young horses in the top ten of the Young Jumper Championship (YJC) classes; a Fourth Level (and rising) dressage horse owned by an Olympian; two of our alumni qualified for the YJC Finals in the Hamptons this fall; and two homebreds winning at Preliminary Level eventing and moving up fast! We are also thrilled to be the first KWPN-NA jumper breeder to export a colt to Holland, Zenith [Indoctro x Consul], sold to VDL Stud in the Netherlands. If you had to pick a favorite horse from your program, which would it be and why? Easy answer! Wildcard (Goodtimes VDL x Silvio 1) has always been our “heart horse”! She is one of the

fantastic daughters that our mare Marie Louise produced for us (shortly after importing her from Hol- land in 2000). Wildcard was awarded “best mover” at her keuring, was top five in free jumping, champion broodmare at Dressage at Devon, champion multiple times first in the dressage arena and then as an event horse. In between, Wildcard carried on her dam’s legacy by producing the champion jumper foal in the U.S., Carte Blanche SCF (by Lupicor), who was later “pre-approved” as a young stallion by the KWPN- NA jury, reserve champion of the ster geldings/stallions in the country, and is now a winning young show jumper who won two YJC classes in Wellington last winter to qualify for the finals at the Hamptons this fall.
