bodes well for the riders who are looking for a partner to take them all the way to the top.” KWPN rosters read like a “who’s who” of equestrian sport, dominating all levels of competition. Some recent famous names from the dressage arena include Valegro (Negro x Ger- shwin), gold medal winner and celebrated hero of the Brit- ish team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with rider Charlotte Dujardin; Jerich Parzival (Jazz x Ulft), who carried Adelinde Cornelissen to stardom and two consecutive World Cup titles; the legendary Totilas (Gribaldi x Glendale) who took the sport to a new whole new level and earned legions of devoted fans while earning a World Cup title and a sweep of the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games gold medals for rider Edward Gal; and Ravel (Contango x Democraat) who became a modern-day legend for American dressage. With Steffen Pe- ters in the saddle, Ravel finished fourth individually at the 2008 Olympic Games, won the 2009 World Cup Final, swept the 2009 Aachen CDIO, earned two bronze medals at the 2010 FEI World Eques- trian Games and has twice been the U.S. Grand Prix Dressage Champion. KWPN horses also leap to new heights in the jumper ring. Big Star (Quick Star x Nimmerdor), who rider Nick Skelton calls “the best horse he’s ever ridden,” had a foot-perfect perfor- mance during the 2012 Olympic Games to help Great Britain earn an emotional team gold medal, claiming not only the win but also the heart of a nation. Te beloved Hickstead (Hamlet x Ekstein) and Eric Lamaze won individual gold and team silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games—the very first indi- vidual gold medal won in equestrian for Canada in Olympic history—and earned more than $4 million CDN in his career. Te flashy gray gelding Uceko (Celano x Koriander) has proven to be an incred- ibly consistent and profitable performer for U.S. rider Kent Farrington, racking up win after win at Grand Prix, as well as winning a Pan American Games team gold medal. In recent years, the Dutch harness horse has become more and more popular. Te world four-in-hand driving championships

riginally from Germany, Siegi Belz-Fry had a career in information technology with AT&T
and Cisco Systems. She began importing Trakehners in 1984. Now a top breeder of Royal Dutch Sport Horses, her farm, Stall Europa, is located on 50 acres of rolling hills near Leesburg, Virginia, and is home to between seven and ten horses. Belz-Fry was named the 2007 KWPN-NA Breeder of the Year. How did you become involved with the KWPN breed? Willy Arts of DG Bar Ranch, who trained my

Trakehner stallion Veneziano, introduced me to the Dutch horses and helped me get started with some quality Dutch mares that he had bred. He has been my mentor for years and without him I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today with my breeding program. How long have you been breeding KWPN horses? I have been breeding Dutch dressage horses since 1998. My goal has always been
to breed the best possible dressage horse — best gaits, best conformation, best mind. What makes the Dutch Warmblood breed special for you? KWPN registered horses are ranked number one in dressage and jumping, and that makes marketing them somewhat easier than horses from other registries. The KWPN- NA doesn’t try to limit your breeding choices, but on the other hand they are quite tough when your youngster reaches breeding age. Exactly the way it should be! What breeding lines have been the most influential in your breeding program and why? I started my breeding program with two mares from DG Bar—both by Wanroij— and they both earned their preferent predicate meaning that at least three of their offspring obtained their ster predicate (upper 20 percent for conformation and movement). As far as stallions go, I’ve been quite successful with OO7, Jazz and Rhodium offspring from my mares. What aspects of your breeding program are you most proud of? Even though I’m a small breeder, I consistently have

foals in the top fives in the country. I own two mares with preferent titles (there are only 22 in the entire U.S.). And of course, Waterloo S. E. (OO7 x Jazz) was the winner of the 2007 Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Cham- pionships as a four-year-old. He then came back to place fifth in the nation at these championships as a six-year-old in 2009, joined by fellow homebred Zorba S.E (OO7 x Wan- roij) who finished in the top ten in the five-year-old division.
