Cut to the Chase


elcome to Warmbloods Today’s September/October edition. I am going to begin this column with an unusual request: I humbly ask for your forgiveness before you read much further. Unexpectedly


we’ve gone and jammed way too much information in this issue’s 84 pages, and the buck stops here. Graphic design aficionados would chastise me for not giving the reader more room to breathe on the pages. “Bigger fonts,” they would tout. “More white space!” Ah, but today that white space is very expensive. It’s no secret that most print


magazines have been hurt by the internet and publishers have had to re-evaluate their marketing, print and distribution strategies to stay afloat. Although print media is still popular in niche markets, printing and mailing costs continue to rise. Subsequently I struggle with that white “real estate” going to waste. Second, I’ll apologize for my bad editing habits, or lack thereof. Even though


my job is to cut, cut, cut as I review the draſts of articles that come in, I’m one of those people who devour the details and tend to leave more of them intact than the average editor. Why? Because usually buried within those details lies an education—important information that might some day help you and me with our own horses. In truth, Warmbloods Today is about educating equestrians who ride, train or breed sport horses. And hopefully we present it in a style that’s enticing and enjoyable. Since our readers on average have owned and ridden horses for more than 25 years, there’s a lot of knowledge, experience and inspiration out there that we can, and should, share with one another. So for once, in the spirit of attempting to break a bad habit, I’m not going


to waste white space in this column recounting the fabulous features, opinion columns and special breed section you’ll find inside. I feel confident, however, that you should—no, you will—learn something interesting in every article, just as I have. Tat is something I won’t apologize for. Even though it pains me to actually cut my own column, here I go. On this


page I leave you with the only white space you’ll see in this issue. You won’t see it again. Take a deep breath now, because the rest of the issue will be quite a ride.
