actually with the riders who have had bad experiences with their horses and as a result they are fearful. Iris enjoys work- ing with horse and rider together to implement many tech- niques to overcome these trust issues. There are, however, times when her eval- uation recommends the owner searches for a new horse. In her rehabilita-

tion process, she uses combinations of it all: classical/traditional training methods which includes long- lining, cavalletti work, multiple suppling
exercises under the rider, gymnastic jumping, along with holistic applications to find the right approach to heal each horse both emotionally and physically. Iris believes these methods are not just relevant for rehabbing a problem horse, but vital for a pain-free and relaxed development starting with a young horse and throughout the progress to FEI work. “It is a ‘preventative to injury’ approach,” she says, “to create a happy, healthy partner. It is essential to keep an open mind to diverse methods of both training and physical healing, which all should be directed to the well-being of the horse.” The horse that veterinarians thought would never walk
normally again is now able to dance in the dressage ring and against big odds has made it to FEI. Clearly, Iris’ multi-faceted approach to healing Tanzeln has left owners John and Kari Cassel and the rest of his fans thrilled with his turn around. It’s truly an art to heal a broken horse like Tanzeln—patiently implementing every possible therapy and training tech- nique at just the right time.
