everSayNever (all one word) Farm is located on just under 200 acres (the majority being forest), about 30 minutes north of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Owner Martha Haley’s breeding

program, which was founded in 1997, can be traced back to a single mare, Never Say Never (Wanroij x Talk of Gold xxa/Milkie), whose two daughters, Rhumba (s. Idocus) and Bosanova NSN (s. Ferro) are the broodmare band, with Bosanova NSN’s daughter, Hosanna NSN (s. Toti- las), joining them in the future. Despite producing only one to three foals each year, Haley’s personal and successful approach to breeding earned her the 2009 KWPN-NA Breeder of the Year award — to date, the only Canadian breeder to earn this honor. What are the goals of your breeding program? To breed attractive, athletic horses that have the mind, talent, movement and conformation

for the highest levels of sport, primarily dressage. I believe it is important to aim high, as not every horse will meet the goal of having all the required traits to be truly competitive at FEI levels. But every horse bred here has suit- ability for sport, being of good conformation, sound and of good mind. The geography of my location certainly is a challenge for riders looking for that special horse — consequently, my foals are bought mainly sight unseen other than photos and video. But to date, no one has been disappointed when the horse steps off the trailer. What breeding lines have been the most influential in your breeding program and why? My foundation mare Never Say Never produced three offspring by Ferro, all very athletic with an incredible ability to “sit.” Idocus, as

the sire of Rhumba, has passed on a great shoulder, beautiful eye and superior self-carriage, with a good mind. I cannot forget Wanroij, as he is the sire of Never Say Never, who started it all. Totilas — need I say more other than I think he nicks very well with my elite Ferro mare? Lastly, I have crossed the Oldenburg stallion Sir Gregory with Rhumba to produce two outstanding offspring, with a third on the way. I finally found Rhumba’s nick, even if he is not KWPN! If I particularly like the resulting offspring of a cross, I do not hesitate to try it again a second and third time. Finding the best nick for each mare is the challenge faced by any breeder. What are some of the major successes of your program? As well as breeding the number one foal in North America, I produced Ulysses (Ferro x Wanroij) the top

three-year-old gelding/stallion in North America at his studbook inspection, who went on to qualify for the very competitive Young Horse Jumping Championships in Brazil. I have produced two elite mares. Last year, Gauguin NSN (Sir Gregory x Idocus) was sold and exported to Germany. When so many buyers import from Germany, I am especially pleased to be able to say one of my horses was exported there. I am very proud of the consistency of the quality of horse I am producing, as breeding can be such a gamble.

next generation of world-class horses. Troughout a stallion’s life, he and his offspring are constantly monitored. Tis information is stored and is the base for tracking conformation, dressage and show jumping traits which serves as a guideline for breeders in finding a suitable match for their mares. North American stallions are evaluated at DG Bar Ranch in California, Iron Spring Farm in Pennsylvania or at other select locations. Depending on their age and type, stallions are shown in-hand, in free jumping and free movement and in a riding or driving test. To become approved, stallions must also undergo a pedigree evaluation and vet examination that includes x-rays and endoscopy. All stallions that make it through this preliminary testing will go on to a performance test or complete their perfor- mance requirement through sport. Descending from an accomplished family of jumping athletes,

Bosch Blue (Cantos x Mr. Blue) made history in 2012 by becom- ing the first North American stallion approved through a 21-day performance test held in Alberta, Canada, under the full author- ity and standards of the KWPN. Te evaluation criteria and standards used in North America were the same as those of the KWPN in Holland, and with his approval, Bosch Blue will have the same status as approved stallions in Holland that have success- fully completed their stallion approval process. Each fall the inspections, called keuringen, are held at loca-

tions around the U.S. and Canada. Experts from Holland and North America judge young horses, geldings, stallions and mares to determine studbook status and award prizes for the breed’s top horses. Attending a keuring is optional for foals, yearlings and two-year-olds. Tose that are presented are awarded a first or
