CHILDREN at Lunsford Primary School in Larkfield now have their own special area in the playground in the shape of a newly built pavilion where they can enjoy reading or a quiet chat. Formany years, youngsters at the school in Swallow Road wanted a designated quiet space, so parents raised funds to purchase the struc- ture which can also be used as an outside teaching classroom. It will be known as Lunsford Lodge following a competition to name
it that was jointly won byMillie and Alex. The pavilion was decorated with bunting and balloons for the proud momentwhenMPTraceyCrouch helped pupils cut the ribbon for the of- ficial opening ceremony. The school also celebrated another landmark with the arrival of its
newheadMatt Dechaine,who said hewas thrilled with the support and community spirit at Lunsford.

Councils ‘cash in’ with parking fines
PEOPLE might complain about parking problems in Tonbridge and Malling, but the price they pay for overstaying their wel- come is just the tip of the ice- berg, compared to many other parts of Kent. Figures released by the RAC Foundation reveal that Canter- bury City Council raked in more than £2.5m in parking fees and fines between 2011 and 2012 – while Tonbridge and Malling’s was less than a third of that. Almost all of the local coun-
cils in Kent boosted their profits from parking charges and fines in the same period, with Can- terbury and Tunbridge Wells profiting the most. Only Thanet and Shepway
saw a drop in the amount of money from parking. Tonbridge and Malling’s in-
come from parking charges and fines rose by £59,000 from £685,000 to £744,000 in 2011/12, while neighbouring Maidstone’s rose by £62,000 from £495,000 to £557,000. Tunbridge Wells climbed
from £2,356,000 to £2,490,000 in the same period – an increase of £134,000. Medway, which also topped
the £2m mark, rose by £80,000 to £2,090,000 and Sevenoaks from £1,431,000 to £1,568,000. Nationally, Westminster City Council pulls in most money from car parking charges and fines – a staggering £41m a year.
Professor Stephen Glaister, di-
rector of the RAC Foundation, said: “For many local authori- ties, parking charges are a nice little earner. Hundreds of mil- lions of pounds are contributed annually to council coffers through parking charges.” But he added: “Drivers who
are paying them have a reason- able expectation to see the cash spent on improving the roads.” Only recently, Barnet Council
was panned by a High Court judge for illegally trying to set charges to raise revenue, rather than for traffic management. Steve Humphrey, director of planning, housing and environ- mental health at Tonbridge & Malling Council, said: “The in- formation and comparisons re- ferred to by the RAC seem inconsistent in theway they are presented. “Local councils have different
ways of charging and account- ing for parking income and ex- penditure that doesn’t seem to be reflected in the results. “The legal case referred to ap-
plies to on-street parking only. In Tonbridge and Malling there is very little on-street pay and display charging and the coun- cil effectively subsidises this management and enforcement regime. “The costs of charging in the borough remain modest and have seen relatively small in- creases in recent times.”
