McFly rock the stage at Music on the Hill

By Hannah Roberts

MUSIC lovers and McFly fans were treated to a great show at the Music on the Hill Festival. The top boy band came straight from

the Olympic Park, where their show the previous night had been cut short by time restraints. But there were no such problems at

Kings Hill, where the boys were such a hit they were encouraged to play two extra songs, one of which was an im- provisation about the festival. There was light drizzle as fans poured

on to the site, but the first act, Young Brando, kept the crowd entertained on their debut gig. They were followed by the indie-pop boy band, The Vamps, who got the audience fully involved with a great set including their own song Wild Heart and some cover songs. They left the stage through the press

pit, giving the delighted audience high fives. In between each act, the big screen fea-

tured each of the three charities sup- ported by the festival, reminding ticket holders of the good causes they were helping: Teens Unite, Demelza, and The Children’s Development Trust. Finally, the act everyone had been waiting for – Mcfly (Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter). They said: “We had a such a great time at Music on the Hill in 2011 that when we were asked to come back we had to say yes!”

Tom and Dougie from McFly at the Music on the Hill festival

They kicked off with amedley of their

older songs, and followed by nine more recent tracks, chatting with the audience between songs. One of the highlights was Dougie’s “story time” in which he told howMcFly had become the success they are today, while the other band members provided the visuals. The audience loved it, especially when

the boys finished off with the song “It’s all About You”, which they dedicated to their fans and backstage crew. The line-up at the three-day festival in- cluded Jools Holland, Peter Andre, Gareth Gates and Stooshe. Attendance was said to be up 30% on

the 2011 festival, and all themoney from ticket sales will go to the charities. For more pictures of the event, log on to www.downsmail.co.uk

Anger at loss of woods Continued from page one

so-called ‘greenest Government ever’ stated that the new NPPF would give sufficient protection to irreplaceable habitats such as ancient woodland. It clearly does not. “We are concerned that this outcome could de-

fine the level of protection given to ancient woods in all future planning decisions across England. With just 2% ancient woodland cover remaining, we cannot afford to lose any more.” The application had been strongly opposed by

theWoodland Trust in a two-year campaign along with 6,000 of its members and supporters, Kent Wildlife Trust, and hundreds of opponents who formed the Save OakenWood community group. As well as reduced access to the wood’s public pathways, a variety of rare wildlife species live in the wood and are now under threat, including pipistrelle and Natterer’s bats. Ancient woodland is land that has been con- tinuously wooded since 1600. The undisturbed soils and ecosystems found in these sites are- home to a host of rare, protected wildlife. The Gallagher Group won the argument by claiming there was no viable alternative to the quarrying of ragstone from the wood. It said re- serves at Hermitage Quarry were due to run out by 2015, and the extension would allow quarry- ing to continue for a further 25 years, protecting 300 jobs. Gallagher chief executive Nick Yandle said:

“We had support from English Heritage (for the supply of Kentish Ragstone rather than us, but as we are the only source it amounted to the same), Historic Royal Palaces, Ancient Monument Soci- ety, Kent Archaeological Group, the Minerals Planning Authority (KCC), Kent conservation of- ficers, Canterbury Cathedral, The Bishop of Lon- don, South East LEP, our local MP Tracey Crouch and many local individuals and businesses.”
