for-All and the winner was WHISTLIN’ DIXIE, who also won the Fastest Lobster Boat Afl oat race. In the Fastest Working Lobster Boat it was 4GIRLS followed by BAILEY & BELLA.
The biggest race of the day was the Boats Built by Johnson’s Boat Yard. First went to WILD ONE, followed by CASCO MISS and the STRETCHED VETTE. Just after the race a discussion took place as to where on the calendar we should put this race next year. Most thought that it would tie nicely with the Portland races. As we approached the new date for the Moosebec Reach races on 4 July, the rainy weather had moved on.
It was another great turnout, 84 boats. In the Wooden Boat Race, it was the
fi rst race for Shawn Alley’s LITTLE GIRLS. This is a well-known boat to those who followed the racing in the early ‘80s. She was designed and built by Calvin Beal Jr. She is wood and measures 28 feet and is now powered with a 514 ci 675-hp Ford gasoline engine. There are a number of people that remember her fi rst race when just before the races she lost steering and hit the bridge between Beals Island and Jonesport. A baby on board fell over and a person on board jumped over into the water and saved him. He bested Jeremy Beal’s LORNA R. for the win.
In the Gasoline Classes: In Class A the winner was Doug Dodge in OLD DUFF. The winner in Class B was WIDE OPEN In Class C it was LITTLE GIRLS besting LORNA R. again. There were no entrants in Class D, and in Class E, it was just Galen Alley’s FOOLISH PLEASURE on the line.
Next up was the 14 diesel classes and all were surprised when UNCLE’S UFO, owned by 83 year old Andrew Gove of Stonington came down the Reach to sign in. There were no entrants in Class G, Class
I, and Class L. The winners were: Class A, Dwight
AVENUE; Class K, UNCLE’S UFO; the biggest race of the day was Class M when 10 boats came to the line and the winner was Dixon Smith’s SIZE MATTERS; and Class N's winner was Jeff Strout’s NEVER ENOUGH.
Church, Jr.’s KHLOEI-KHINLER; Class B, Ennis Wright’s ERIKA & KYLE; Class C, Erick Blackwood’s SHANNA & ERICK; Class D, Dana Beal's RIGHT STUFF; Class E, Kenton Fenney’s BAD INFLUENCE; Class F, LeBaron Libby’s GRAMP’S LEGACY; Class H, Brian Kennedy’s MADISON ALEXA, who at the fi nish line blew her turbo; Class J, Wendall Bryant’s 16TH
In the Gasoline Free-for-All, FOOLISH PLEASURE jumped out to an early lead and as he stormed down the course and nearing the fi nish line all off a sudden she took a hard right at the committee boat and a puff of smoke came from around the engine. She crossed the line and came to a stop up near the bridge. Galen thought he had blown the motor so he was towed back to his dock but later it was learned the engine was fi ne. In the Diesel Free-for-All the top boat was UNCLE’S UFO with second going to BAD INFLUENCE and AMANDA JOY & LOGI BEAR third. In the World’s Fastest Working Lobster Boat and it was UNCLE’S UFO and in the World’s Fastest Recreational Lobster Boat the winner was LITTLE GIRLS. It was now onto Searsport and the weather was near perfect.
Talking about arguments, there was a warm discussion with Ian Adair is boat TOUCH OF MADNESS and her trap extension. The rules have never allowed trap extensions to be measured as part of a boat. She was placed in Work Boat Class C. The winners in the Gasoline Classes
were: Class A, CRY BABY; Class B, WIDE OPEN; Class C, THUNDERBOLT; no entrants in Class D; and in Class E, FOOLISH PLEASURE.
In the Diesel Classes there were no entrants in Class B, C, D and L. The winners in the Diesel Classes were: Class A, David Grant's EASY MONEY; Class E, MISS KARLEE; Class F, MS. ROSE; Class G, Todd Ritchie's SEACOCK; Class H, FIRST TEAM; Class I, , MISTY; and Class J, Scott Kennan's DEAR ABBIE; Class K, UNCLE’S UFO; Class M, Vance Bunker’s SARI ANN; and Class N, Chris Page’s ABIGAIL & CARTER. In the Wooden Boat Race the winner
was WIDE OPEN.
In the Gasoline Free-for-All it was FOOLISH PLEASURE. Just after the fi nish THUNDERBOLT developed an engine
problem and was towed into the dock. Later it was learned that he had spun a bearing. In the Diesel Free-for-All it was UNCLE’S UFO.
The last race of the day, Fastest Commercial Lobster Boat, was no surprise when UNCLE’S UFO crossed in fi rst. The following day we headed to Stonington, and when sign ups concluded they had 93 boats entered. It was another day of bright sunshine, but warm. In the Lady Skipper’s Race, it was
HEY BABY, followed by Lindsay Durkee’s BLACK DIAMOND and Tabatha Ciomei’s OBSESSION took third.
In the Novi Boat Race the winner was Josh Gove’s SURPRISE.
Usually there are double the amount of boats in the Johns Bay Boat Co. Race, but there was to be a launching at their shop on 20 July. Only four boats were entered in the race and the newest boat, John Williams’ KHRISTY MICHELLE [Johns Bay 44, 500-hp Cummins] took fi rst.
