The Diesel Classes only had one Class with no entrants, Class L. In the Gasoline Free-for-All it was all FOOLISH PLEASURE, followed by LITTLE GIRLS and WIDE OPEN. In the Diesel Free for All it was

UNCLE’S UFO, Gary Genthner's LISA MARIE and Jeff Eaton's LA BELLA VITA. In the Boatbuilder’s Exhibition Class

first went to TOUCH OF MADNESS, followed by FIRST TEAM and LA BELLA VITA.

In the Jimmy Stevens Cup – Fastest

Working Lobster - the winner was UNCLE’S UFO, with second going to LISA MARIE. The last race of the day it was the same results: UNCLE’S UFO, LISA MARIE and LA BELLA VITA.

It was a great day of racing and a huge crowd gathered for the prize ceremony on the commercial pier. As usual the prizes were great with about $10,000 in cash and a 14-foot Holland hull given away. On Saturday 20 July it was off to

Friendship. The entire Northeast was still under the grip of high temperatures and humidity. Fortunately at Friendship there was a nice sea breeze, which built during the races, nature’s air conditioning. This year the races were dedicated to Friendship boatbuilder Wes Lash, who had been a major reason the races were started and kept going. The money raised from the races and food sales on shore have helped fund the Friendship ambulance service. There were 32 boats signed up for

the day’s event and they wondered what changes they could make to get a better turn

of historic schooners in America this holiday week.

ROCKLAND, ME — On Friday July 5th ,

with beautiful, hot, sunny weather and fair winds, the 37th

annual Great Schooner Race

was a huge success, with the schooner Mary Day crossing the fi nish fi rst to secure the Cutty Sark Award and bragging rights until next year’s race. 17 boats participated in this year’s race.

Captain Barry King accepted his trophy at the evening Awards Ceremony, noting that, “This event would not be possible without the support and enthusiasm of the thousands of devoted guests who sign up to experience the thrill of sailing on these traditional vessels each season.” Kendall, a guest who raced upon the

Stephen Taber, had this to say, “It was just a thrill! From the scenery, to the camarade-

out. One thought was to switch and run on Sunday since we know that some do not race when they can go haul and make money. The race committee was going to meet and discuss the issue and have an answer to the MLBRA before the annual meeting. In the Gasoline Classes there were no entrants in Class B and D. The winners for the Gasoline Classe were: Class A, CRY BABY; Class C, LITTLE GIRLS; and and Class E, FOOLISH PLEASURE. After the race we saw LITTLE GIRLS being towed into the dock by BLACK DIAMOND to be hauled out. Calvin Beal said after the race that they had lost a tooth on the bottom of the distributor and that it was in the base. So she was done for the day.

In the Diesel Classes, there were no entrants in Class B and L. The winners of the Diesel Classes were: Class A, EASY MONEY; Class C, Raymond Carter’s WHO’S BUYN; Class D, Matthew Taylor’s C GIRL; Class E, Michael Gray’s VENOM; Class F, MS. ROSE; Class G, EMILY GRACE; Class H, FIRST TEAM; Class I, MISTY; Class J, Robbie Maloney’s CHERYL LYNN II; Class K, LISA MARIE; Class M, Scott Carter’s INSTIGATOR; and Class N, Keith Simmons’ HEATHER & ISAAC. For those of you who remember the front page photograph showing the lobster boat INSTIGATOR hard ashore at Spruce Head following a spring storm a couple of years ago, well this is her all repaired and looking like nothing had happened. There was only one boat in the Fastest Friendship Lobster Boat and that was

HEATHER & ISAAC. In the Gasoline Free-for-All just two boats showed, FOOLISH PLEASURE and CRY BABY and we know who won that contest.

Five boats went to the line in the Diesel

Free-for-All and this was going to be a good battle between LISA MARIE and MISTY. They were close all the way down the course, but it was evident that LISA MARIE had a slight edge getting the win by a boat length. Next came the Wooden Boat Race and without LITTLE GIRLS, there was just one entrant, EMILY GRACE. In the last raceof the day, Fastest Lobster Boat, three boats were on the line. FOOLISH PLEASURE jumped out to a quick lead and led LISA MARIE to the fi nish followed by HEATHER & ISAAC. So far the racing has been great. Eight races down and four to go; Harpswell is up next.
