Grants to Penobscot Marine Museum - Help Put Historic Photographs Online Waterfront News

“Each image takes about fi ve minutes to scan,” explains Kevin, “but with a grant from the Cascade Foundation we were able to purchase a Nikon D800E professional digital SLR camera which cuts that time down to around fi fteen seconds.” Kevin hopes to get the remaining 80,000 images online within the next three years. Penobscot Marine Museum has fi ve historic photography exhibits currently travelling around the state of Maine. In re- searching these exhibits, the museum often collects information about images from town residents. With a grant from the Maine Communities Foundation for a professional digital voice recorder, the museum is now able to record and preserve these oral histo- ries which might otherwise be lost. The grants from Cascade Foundation and Maine Communities Foundation have

enabled the museum to purchase not only the Nikon and the voice recorder, but also two state of the art PCs, an Epson digital pro- jector, a small, high-resolution digital still and video camera, and two Epson fl atbed scanners. The Penobscot Marine Museum’s photography collection is used online by his- torians, writers, educators, students, geneal- ogists and the public. This equipment helps the Museum to ensure important historical and cultural information is not lost, and that as much of its collections as possible can be shared with, learned from, and enjoyed by the world-wide online community. The Museum is extremely grateful to these two institutions. Their generous gifts benefi t not only the Museum but everyone who has an interest in preserving our cultural heritage. This photography database can be viewed at www.PenobscotMarineMuseum.org.

very hard to be a good and helpful friend. He always had words of encouragement for others, even during times when it was Pete who desperately needed help.

SEARSPORT – Kevin Johnson, Penobscot Marine Museum’s Photography Curator, has the enormous task of putting online the largest collection of historic photographs in Maine. With grants from the Cascade Foundation of Rockport, Maine and the Maine Community Foundation, his job has just been made easier. Penobscot Marine Museum’s photography collection of over 140,000 images provides important docu- mentation of life in Maine and New England from the 1880s through the 1990s. It has taken a dozen volunteers six years to put 60,000 of these images on the Penobscot Marine Museum website.

1991 in Augusta, ME. During Peter’s short stay on earth, he touched hundreds of lives in a positive and meaningful way. Peter made friends easily. He was a highly gifted athlete, especially as a pitcher in baseball, which was his fi rst love. He had the opportunity to play champion- ship games with the Surry Tigers, Coastal Little League, Junior and Senior League and the George Stevens Academy Eagles. Peter was an avid and naturally talented

fi sherman. Peter could fi nd a way to catch a bass out of a bucket of water on the lawn. He loved the outdoors, East Grand Lake, Alaska, and many other lakes and ponds in Maine. As a young man Peter always dreamed of being a starting pitcher for the Red Sox then after that he was going to be a bass pro fi sherman.

Peter had a great and goofy sense of humor, his smile lit up the world. He tried

Special Foster Parents Mike and Gina Jewett and family. Many cousins, all of his former teammates and coaches over the years. Peter left behind another family that few

of us knew, they were always on his mind. Peter always spoke of his concern for his birth family. They are Birth-Mother Rose, his sisters Amber, Alisha and Marie, Uncle & Aunt Kevin & Lynn and Uncle Gary. There will be a Celebration of Peter’s life, on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 2:00 PM - at the GSA Baseball fi eld. Adoptive family and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of fl owers, we think that Peter’s spirit will be very grateful if folks would donate to the Peter Dickinson GSA Base- ball Fund to be used to build a permanent location for the baseball concession stand and any other improvements needed for the baseball fi eld that Coach Kane and Coach Gray deem necessary. Peter loved that place more than any other. Please make checks payable to: Peter Dickinson GSA Baseball Fund, 23 Union Street, Blue Hill, ME 04612.
