was Gary Genthner’s LISA MARIE [Libby 34, 690-hp Iveco], who was in a real tight battle with Chris Smith’s MISTY [Crowley Beal 33, 650-hp Scania] and Scott Woods’ WILD ONE [Crowley Beal 33, 892-GM]. As the racers headed toward the fi nish line WILD ONE crossed with two boat lengths to spare, followed by MISTY and LISA MARIE. In Diesel Class J, 551 to 700 hp, 36 feet and over, Scott Keenan’s DEAR ABBIE [Northern Bay 38, 610-hp Cum- mins] crossed fi rst, then came BLUE EYED GIRL and MILLER TIME. Diesel Class L [901 hp, 28 feet and over] had just one boat, Rick Albertson’s ALL SET [Holland 38, 1,200-hp MAN] so it was combined with Class K [701 to 900 hp, 28 feet and over]. The battle between Justin Philbrook’s RIS- ING SON [Calvin Beal 38, 750-hp Detroit] and Nicholas Lunt’s SEASMOKE was won by RISING SON. Somehow Tom Clemons and his 4GIRLS [Wesmac 46, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] was entered in the Diesel Class M, 40 feet and over, up to 750 hp and he had no trouble distancing himself from the competition. However in all fairness fi rst goes to SAND DOLLAR III followed by ENTRAPMENT. 4 GIRLS was then given for the overall awards points third place in Diesel Class N, 40 feet and over; 750 hp and over. There were only two boats on the line for Class N, which was won by Andy Johnson’s WHISTLIN’ DIXIE [Holland 40, 1000-hp Caterpillar] and second went to Keith Jordan’s BAILEY & BELLA [Calvin Beal 44, 1000-hp Caterpillar]. In the Gasoline Free for All, four boats came to the line with THUNDERBOLT the winner.
Next came the Diesel Free for All, and nine boats came to the line and the winner was WHISTLIN’ DIXIE.
Only four boats opted to race in the Fastest Lobster Boat and the big question was THUNDERBOLT fastest enough to best WHISTLIN’ DIXIE? Well, she was winning by two boat lengths. Following the race THUNDERBOLT headed for the dock and developed an engine issue. No one was sure how bad the problem was, but they did not show up to race at Rockland.
ROCKLAND LOBSTER BOAT RACES 16 June 2013
ROCKLAND – Another beautiful day on the mid-coast of Maine greeted racers. Sign-ups went well, but it was not without controver- sy. People were still talking about VENOM and one person was complaining that there was not a lady skippers or powder-puff race. I explained that the Association had put in a women’s race, but that only a few signed upped and at year’s end no one had even qualifi ed for the trophy. It was offered a couple of years and then the members voted to eliminate it. We also had Ian Adair come up and sign in TOUCH OF MADNESS. The boat is a 22-foot Sisu powered with a 496 Chevrolet inboard and boats must be 24 feet to compete in the Gasoline and Diesel classes. He explained that he had added two feet to his boat so he was signed up for Gasoline Class C. With no entrants in Work Boat Class A,
the fi rst boats to race were Work Boat Class B. Five boats were entered, but just four crossed the fi nish line. Continuing his win- ning ways from the day before was J-BIRD. There were only two boats in Class C, which was easily won by CASCO MISS followed by Joseph Martin’s MISS ABBEY. There was only one entrant in Gasoline
DEAR ABBIE won Class J at Boothbay.
Class A, CRY BABY, so they ran down with Class B’s three boats. I am not sure what happened overnight but CRY BABY came screaming up on the far side of the course to cross fi rst with WIDE OPEN second, which was reversed the day before. [Just before the start of the Bass Harbor races Wayne Rich

said that the reason they were not as fast was because they had broken a valve spring. As they were heading back home after Rockland the engine did not sound right and they shut it down and were towed the rest of the way.
