getting shorter. Lobster boat racing is in full swing and already there was controversy at Boothbay and Rockland, which makes one wonder why you do this. Having been a hockey offi cial I am use to abuse. Fortunate- ly my stay at the Tugboat Inn in Boothbay to run the races there was most enjoyable. Hot dogs from the stand around the corner, a nice dinner at the Tugboat Inn’s dining room both nights and able to enter more steamships into the computer, what more could one ask for? Most anyone that reads this publication understands the devotion we have for doc- umenting maritime history. I am not going to guess the amount of hours that are spent on a yearly basis to create databases of var- ious marine subjects like vessels, captains and shipwrecks. I have always had a love of maritime history and that gave me a dif- ferent agenda when writing articles for this paper. Most journalists take a much quicker approach to everything they do because they work on extremely tight deadlines. They try to write down their interviews, and even though this does save time, it opens them up to inaccuracies. I tape interviews, transcribe and save the tapes for historical purposes. When a photographer takes photographs most are disposed of when they are done. Some create fi les in case they are needed later, and that has been made much easier in the digital age. Still I am betting a lot of photographs end up deleted. Not here, we probably have more than 50,000 images and growing.
What some fail to realize is that this is all history and by throwing it out, the history captured in that document or photograph is
gone. Recently I had an older friend pass away. I was informed indirectly by an e-mail from someone saying they were sorry to hear of his passing. Well that was the fi rst I had heard about it so I looked for an obituary and there was none. A Yahoo group we both are on had no news and he had not written or commented on the group for a couple of weeks. Without any other options, I called his house and was informed that indeed he had passed away a couple of weeks before. During the conversation with his widow she remarked that they were in his offi ce clean- ing it out and tossing it all in the trash. I do not know what his collection consisted of, but here was a man who had dedicated his life following retirement, at least 20 years, learning everything about this particular maritime industry. As politely as possible I asked them to stop and box everything and I would pick it up and save it. A couple of years ago another friend
passed away, who had been in a nursing home with no hope of ever getting out. I knew what he wanted to do with some of his collection and waited to hear what his heirs planned to do with the rest. Even before he passed his relatives began selling some of his property. The more you heard the more you understood that to at least one of the relatives it was all about the money. Some of the more pricy items were sent to a high end auction. Others were bundled up and sent to a regular auction and sold for pennies on the dollar. If I had had more money that day I would have bought a lot more than I did. The place that was to end up with some of
