nia], followed by Rusty Brewer’s LOOK OUT [Young Brothers 38, 700-hp Detroit]. There were six boats entered in the
Wooden Boat Race and it was going to be an interesting race. Unfortunately defending winner Chris Page’s ABIGAIL & CARTER [Johns Bay Boat Co. 42, 1,000-hp Caterpil- lar] was absent, but runner up Bill Lowe’s EMILY GRACE [Bill Lowe 30, 500-hp GM] was there. It was WIDE OPEN and EMILY GRACE fi ghting for the top spot and at the fi nish line it was WIDE OPEN by a boat length.

several years regarding boats not racing in their proper race class. This issue has been more prevalent ever since electronic diesel engines were put into production. An engine today can come listed at one horsepower, but with a laptop computer an engine mechanic can boost this engine up several hundred horsepower. Several years ago a three pro- test ruling was created but it was never used. What do you do about suspected boats not racing in their appropriate class? A sugges- tion was has been made that anyone who wins their class for two or three years would be forced to move up to the next class. Finally we were ready for racing. One change to the races was the three Boothbay races were now just one race and would not start the event. The fi rst race of the day was for Work Boat Class A [Skiffs 16-feet and under with outboards up to 30 hp, Operator 18 years and younger] and B [Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 31 to 90 hp], since there was just one boat, Cole Poland in SAVANNAH in Class A with a speed of 19 mph. The winner of Class B was Marshall Spears’ J-BOAT [16-footer, 90-hp]. In Class C [Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 91 hp and up] Dave Johnston’s CASCO MISS

[Eastern 22, 140-hp Honda] took the win. The Gasoline Classes were combined into one race since there was one boat in Class A [4 & 6 cylinder 24 feet and over], CRY BABY [Custom 25, 292 Chevrolet]; one boat in Class B [V-8 up to 375 cid, 24 feet and up], WIDE OPEN [Robert Rich 28, 350 Chevrolet], two boats in Class C [V8, 376 to 525 cid, 28 feet and over], THUNDER- BOLT and BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32, 454 Chevrolet] and no one in Classes D [V-8, Over 525 cid, 28 feet and over] and E [V-8, Over 525 cid, 28 feet and over, super- chargers/Turbos]. THUNDERBOLT was making her
fi rst appearance since Portland in 2010 and all wondered just how well she would run. Another boat that was going to be faster was Colyn Rich’s WIDE OPEN, which received a new 350 Chevy engine over the winter. As the four boats came towards the
fi nish line it was THUNDERBOLT, clocked at 44 mph, with a healthy lead, followed by WIDE OPEN, CRY BABY and BLACK DIAMOND.
The Fastest Working Lobster Boat – Boothbay had seven boats come to the line, and some were only entered in this race. The race winner was Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin Beal 38, 650-hp Sca-

Now it was time for the Diesel Classes and there were some new boats competing. In Diesel Class A there was Fred Farnham’s TESSA’S PRIDE from Boothbay, which is a JC 31 powered with a 210-hp Cummins. This was formerly raced by David Schlaefer of Bernard, who sold her to a fi sherman in Boothbay and Fred said that he was now her third owner. In Class C was Matthew Taylor’s C GIRL from Bremen, which is a Crowley 36 powered with a 250-hp John Deere that was just launched. In Class E, as mentioned above, Ed Shirley’s new boat MISS KARLEE, a Mitchell Cove 32 pow- ered with a 410-hp Sisu. In Class F, Parker Poole IV of Falmouth entered DETERMI- NATION, a Five Islands 35 powered with a 420-hp Caterpillar. This boat was designed by Royal Lowell and was built from the Bruno 35 mould in 1995. In Class J, another new boat was Ryan Miller’s MILLER TIME from Spruce Head. She is a Calvin Beal 38 powered with a 660-hp Caterpillar. In Class K, another new Calvin Beal 38 was Nicholas Lunt’s SEASMOKE, powered with a 750-hp Iveco from Tenant’s Harbor. In Class M, there were three new boats: Sy Knight’s BELLA CRIE, a Young Brothers 40 with a 380-hp Volvo; Daniel Lowery’s ENTRAPMENT, a 43 foot Canadian boat
with a 375-hp John Deere from Trevett; and Johnson Boyer’s JACKIE O., a Duffy 42 powered with a 600-hp Caterpillar. Class A [Up to 235 hp, 24 to 31 feet] has been dominated by David Grant’s EASY MONEY [Northern Bay 28, 218-hp Sisu] and continued his winning ways. In Class B [Up to 235 hp, 32 feet and over] MERGAN- SER outpaced Matt Thiboult’s SANDRA ANN [Young Brothers 33, 210-hp Cum- mins]. ALL OUT was the only entrant in Class C [236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet] and C GIRL was the only entrant in Class D [236 to 335 hp, 34 feet over]. In Class E [336 to 435 hp, 24 to 33 feet] and it was going to be interesting to see just how competitive VENOM would be in this class. As they headed for the fi nish line VENOM was well in front with MISS KARLEE second and Nick Wiberg’s MISS KATIE [Holland 31, 355-hp Cummins] third. The boat to beat in Class F [336 to 435 hp, 34 feet and over] over the last several years has been Ed Turosian’s MISS ROSE [Mitchell Cove 35, 350-hp Cummins] from Seabrook, New Hampshire. He easily out distanced them for the win. Another boat that has dominated her class over the last several years has been Todd Ritchie’s SEACOCK [Calvin Beal 34, 436-hp Sisu] in Class G [436 to 550 hp, 28 to 35 feet]. There were two other boats entered and one, Bill Lowe’s EMILY GRACE creat- ed some real competition to SEACOCK last year. SEACOCK took the win with EMILY GRACE second and Zach Donnell’s HAP- PY HOUR [Mitchell Cove 35, 500-hp John Deere] third. The only entrant in Class H [436 to 550 hp, 36 feet and over] was Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM [Northern Bay 36, 410- hp Sisu] so he raced with Class I [551 to 700 hp, 28 to 35 feet] to make it more exciting. Class I has been an interesting class over the last several years. Last year’s overall winner
