BRIAN MITCHELL leads all others in Class C at Rockland. Continued from Page 7.
Fortunately the only other damage was some minor scarring of the rocker arm.] Since they are both in different classes they both won their respective classes and Walter Rich’s FROSTY PUNKIN [General Marine 25, 350-hp Chevrolet] was second in Class B. Two boats, BLACK DIAMOND and TOUCH OF MADNESS, came to the line for Gasoline Class C and it was an easy win for TOUCH OF MADNESS with a speed of 42.2 mph.
Now came the diesel classes. Class
A was another win for EASY MONEY. Four boats were registered for Class B and MERGANSER took the top prize. In Class C Mitchell Eaton’s BRIAN MITCHELL [Young Brothers 33, 300-hp Caterpillar] took the win. In Class D, Geoffrey Barrett’s LONG FACES [Duffy 34, 315-hp Cum- mins] was able to get by C-GIRL for the win. In Class E, four boats came to the line and in it was VENOM once again. MS. ROSE continued her domination of Class F. SEA- COCK bested EMILY GRACE in Class G. FIRST TEAM took the top spot in Class H. At sign-up Gary Genthner of LISA MARIE opted to move from Class I and go up to Class K, knowing that he cannot move back down. There were just two boats in Class I and this time it was MISTY besting WILD ONE in a close fi nish. Class J was won by Carl Gross’ HEY BABY [Northern Bay 36, 610-hp Volvo] followed by DEAR ABBIE. Always one of the most interesting boats on the racing circuit is Glenn Crawford’s

WILD, WILD WEST [West 28, 466 ci In- ternational]. When she is idling black smoke pours from her stack and Cameron Craw- ford, who was at her helm today, promised that he was going to put on a show. As they came up the course all eyes on the committee boat watched the black smoke pour out of WILD, WILD WEST. Then it began turning white and that means something was going very sour in the engine. Then she went dead in the water with lots of white smoke pouring from inside the shelter. Following the race he said that there had been a catastrophic turbo failure. They found pieces of turbo fi ns in the bilge and the explosion blew the exhaust off the engine. LISA MARIE came across the line fi rst with RISING SON second. There were no entrants in Class L and just two in Class M, which was won by JACKIE O. with BELLA CRIE second. Class N is always a great battle between WHISTLIN’ DIXIE and 4GIRLS, with WHISTLIN’ DIXIE usu- ally on top and today would be no different. In the Gasoline Free-for-All it was all
TOUCH OF MADNESS followed by CRY BABY, BLACK DIAMOND and FROSTY PUNKIN.
Eight boats were on the line for the start of the Diesel Free for All. Again this was going to be interesting to see who fi nished where. WHISTLIN’ DIXIE took fi rst fol- lowed by LISA MARIE, WILD ONE and 4GIRLS.
Next up was the Wooden Boats with seven boats signed up. Chris Page’s AB- IGAIL & CARTER and EMILY GRACE usually fi nished within a boat length of each other and it was anyone’s guess who was
each boat.
On the return trip, Dr. Paris was accom- panied by his son on KIWI SPIRIT.
Alan
Paris, 49, an accomplished sailor in his own right, competed in the One-Two in 1995 and the Around-Alone race in 2002. Dr. Paris said, “Boat racing aside, it’s a wonderful opportunity to spend time like that with my son, many parents never have that chance and I feel as though I am following in my
going to win. As they ran up the course it was close but as they neared the fi nish it was ABIGAIL & CARTER sliding across fi rst with EMILY GRACE second and WIDE
