YOU AND THE RAF

Your Story is on the Wing

Storybook Wings is going from strength to strength...but we still need your help! by Lisa Thipthorp, Storybook Wings Manager

S

torybook Wings provides a vital link between RAF parents and their children whilst they are deployed. It enables parents

to record bedtime stories, along with personal messages for their children to listen to, helping to ease the anxiety caused by separation.

Some major changes have happened with the project since January 2013 – the most important one being that we have now have fabulous new software for editing.

As the new software is free, there are no limits to the number of editors that we can involve. We would love to ensure that every family who wants to can record their stories and this is where you come in!

At the moment we have seven extremely busy volunteer editors who are a mix of serving personnel, wives and partners of serving personnel and civilians. We have six more in training, of which three are serving personnel.

If you are interested in finding out how you can become a Storybook Wings Editor, or indeed want to know where you or your serving partner can record a story for your child(ren) before being deployed, please contact me; Lisa Thipthorp, Storybook Wings Manager, to find out more. storybookwings@rafa.org.uk or tel (95351) 7538 or 01780 783 645

Many RAF children and their parents, and the RAF Association would be extremely grateful for your help. Here is just a few of the thank you’s:

“We are finding the Storybook Wings a valuable service for detached personnel and their family left at home. Please continue your amazing service, you are appreciated here in Cyprus!”

“Thank you for all of the time, work and effort everyone on the Storybook Wings team puts in to producing these recordings – it’s difficult to understand

what a 3 year old must be thinking when his mummy doesn’t come home for 4+ months. But to see James’ excitement while she’s reading him one of his favourite stories makes me realise how important this service is...”

“Evan and Arthur enjoy hearing Daddy’s voice and falling to sleep to it. I thought the music was a lovely touch.”

“Thank you for the CDs for my 3 boys, I can’t wait for them to return from school. I have been having difficulty getting our middle child to sleep and am confident these stories will help him to settle.”

“Many thanks for the storybook CD you sent to Benjamin. He loves it and has listened to it three times already! – we have only had it 24 hours! He enjoys saying goodnight to his daddy at the end of the CD. Thank you, we are thrilled!”
