YOU AND THE RAF
Run a business from your SFA Reasons for having to ask permission to I
n the current economic environment, many people are looking for ways to make a bit of extra money. Using Service
Family Accommodation (SFA) to run a business from seems an obvious option with the added benefits of low overheads and flexibility for childcare, carer and other commitments.
Families living in SFA should however be aware that it is a condition of their Licence to Occupy that they must seek written consent from their local Commanding Officer and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation before embarking on any such commercial activities from their property. Some businesses also require the permission of the Local Authority.
From a Service point of view, generally acceptable activities include, the use of SFA for internet and home working; running a mail order catalogue business; being a cosmetic representative; kitchenware sales or registered child-minding. Permission to undertake this sort of activity will normally be granted. However, permission must be sought first.
The reason for the ruling is that there may be security and access considerations relevant, not just for those SFA located behind the wire but those in other locations too. The Housing Manager will also need to be content that the business will not adversely impact neighbours.

Do also remember you are responsible for limiting damage to the property, either by yourself, your family or visitors and for taking any corrective action as necessary. In addition, bear in mind that the MoD will not fund any improvements to your home to run your business, such as enhancements that may be required to meet higher standards for registered child-minding.
If you need to make any changes you should also write to the Housing Manager via the Housing Allocations Service Centre (HASC) for permission to do so and you will be required
to put right any changes you make before you Move Out.
Business or commercial undertakings that could cause a nuisance, such as keeping large numbers of animals; require the installation of industrial machinery; require storage of heavy, large, toxic or explosive materials; car repairs or would result in constant visits to the SFA by members of the public such as advice services are not permitted. In fact, the unauthorised use of your SFA for these activities could lead to a breach of the terms of your Licence to Occupy and legal action being taken.
If you are living in Substitute Service Families Accommodation permission would need to be sought from the landlord by the MoD Substitute Accommodation Contractor.
If you are planning on running a business from your SFA, with the necessary permissions, we wish good luck with your enterprise.
How to apply for permission: As well as writing to your Local Unit Commander, you should email or write to the Housing Manager via the HASC for permission if you live in SFA. For Substitute Accommodation write or email Helpdesk A. Full contact details can be found on the SFA website at
