or KPIs, she added that the measurable outcomes of the program as it relates to fuel or maintenance savings reflect a reduction in the percentage of daily breakdowns and the transportation costs per mile and student. “Te deliverable outcome is to reduce operating
costs, allowing more dollars to be used in the class- room, and to transport students to and from school safely and on time,” Vann-Jackson said. Te reduced-idling program at Houston (Texas) Independent School District, 500 miles to the south of Tulsa PS, is a sophisticated one as the district runs about 1,000 school buses and about another 900 district vehicles. Te majority of the vehicles were equipped with telematics GPS in 2008 to track, among other things, report idling in excess of five minutes. Mark Swackhamer, CAFM, senior manager of fleet operations, said transportation runs two reports every day: one for the yellow buses and another for the facility maintenance vehicles. Ten the information is broken down to each bus and
is sent to all senior managers of the motor pool operations to work with bus drivers to minimize their idle time. Swackhamer doesn’t have any hard data on the maintenance cost savings yet since implement- ing the eco driving training. He projected a few years to see any type of change. But he noted he increased his yellow buses’ miles per gallon by 2.9 percent, which translates to more than a couple of hundred thousand dollars in fuel savings yearly.
PREHEATERS AS A COMPLEMENT TO PROGRAM
Training bus drivers about reduced-idling pro-
