Waterguard Fuel Filter Helps Texas District’s Diesel Buses Running
When it comes to maintaining a school bus fleet, every little bit counts, even replac- ing fuel filters. At La Porte Independent School District in Texas, Shop Manager Jose Cespedes makes sure fuel filters are changed in his diesel-fueled yellow buses, but he also uses one type that he said has helped save him money and time on other engine-related costs. Cespedes said the district’s long-time use
of the Waterguard fuel filter on its diesel-fu- eled buses has helped with the longevity of the buses’ fuel injectors. In fact, he said in the 25 years he has been with the district, begin- ning as a bus mechanic, he recalled having to change fuel injectors three times. “Te district has used these fuel filters
for more than 20 years, and we don’t repair or overhaul our own engines. We still have Waterguard fuel filter boxes from 1988, and
these filters have no issues,” he said. Waterguard’s fuel filter has been effective, Cespedes noted, because it thoroughly re- moves water and particulates from the diesel fuel. Cleaner fuel that runs through fuel injectors then help the injectors to operate efficiently and prevent problems. Diesel buses require frequent fuel filter
changes, but that is a non-issue for Cespedes and his crew considering the savings the transportation department incurs for extend- ing the life of each diesel school bus. “We’ve talked with other districts and
found out that they have to replace their buses’ fuel injectors, which are costly — about $800 to $1,500 per injector,” he explained. “Some engines have six injectors and others have eight. So, that’s savings for us right there.”
