CREATIVE AND CRAFTY

Tere’s an emphasis on creative expression this month – as ever – at Norwich Arts Centre. It’s always a date for your diary, and this installment is no exception; Clutter City Market returns to its home of Norwich Arts Centre on Saturday 27th July supporting the greatest forms of expression you can purchase with your pennies. You may not realise, but Norwich is home to the cream of the crafty crop and the Market regularly showcases the lovingly created wares of DIY handmade artists, illustrators, jewellers, foodies and more. Clutter City is always free entry and this year is no exception, with the day running from 11am – 4pm. Right at the end of the month, it’s time to grab the creative baton yourself by enrolling on the week-long Creative Writing Summer School. Running from Monday 29th July – Fri 2nd August, the week will be led by Claire Sharland and will be an intensive course aimed at the beginner, though also it will also be useful for those with some writing experience who would like fresh inspiration. Trough practical exercises and some analysis of published work, you will explore ways to encourage creativity and considering the fundamental principles of good writing. COCK PISS PARTRIDGE

Te King of Keswick, Te Sultan of Sprowston, Te Maharajah of Mulbarton. Sir Alan of Partridge is making his big screen debut and the whole of Norwich is god damned giddy about it. Alpha Papa is the cinematic debut for Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge and like every blockbuster, it deserves the full premiere red carpet experience. But will Alan really feel at home amongst the glittering fanfare of Leicester Square? Not likely. I don’t think he’ll cope with the pigeons. And so a team of Partridge-ites have taken it upon themselves to come up with a campaign to get the premiere moved to Norwich this August. With the hashtag #angliasquarenotleicestersquare, they’ve taken the social networks by storm, accruing over 5000 members in just a few days. Te guys behind the group say, “Te film premiere being in Norwich would raise so much more attention nationally than just another film in Leicester Square. Alan deserves the key to the city and an open top bus from City Hall to Anglia Square where the red carpet to Hollywood cinema awaits and chilled Blue Nun is served alongside a selection of buffet snacks.” Te story has been picked up by local and national press, including the NME and Te Independent, so it shows the media are listening, but is Alan? Alan? Dan! Dan! Dan!

LIVIN’ ON A MAYOR

"Wooahhh, we're halfway there, woaaah livin' on A MAYOR"! And thus was the announcement from the lycra-d Lords of Rock, our region and country’s best ever rock and hair metal tribute band, Pout at the Devil. So what in the name of sweet hell were they talking about? Well, Norwich’s annual Lord Mayor’s Procession is getting an injection of ‘FUCK- YEAH’ as Pout at the Devil mount Te Waterfront’s procession float. Te band will ride the mechanical steed around Norwich’s City Centre on the back of a 40" truck playing the finest rock covers in their inimitable style. Tey’re already massively well-loved by those who’ve seen their explosive set, but the whole of Norwich deserves the Pout experience, and will get it fully in the face, whether they want it or not! As always, the Lord Mayor’s Celebration is a fun shindig for the city, going beyond the traditional Procession and this year takes place on Saturday 6th July. Tere’s a full line-up of entertainment on at Chapelfield Gardens to boot, so for a full programme and all the essential details, go to www.norwich.gov.uk

HOLT. WHO GOES THERE?

Te answer to that terrible pun of a title is a great many of you, as last year we ventured to the top of the county for what turned out to be a very good year in the Holt Festival’s short history. Subsequently nominated for several awards, it brought a wealth of different entertainment to North Norfolk including – for us at Outline – the gig of the year, as Beth Jeans Houghton unleashed an explosive set on the Holt Village Hall. A venue that looked more used to marrow judging competitions was an unlikely, but intimate venue for a must-see act, and we’re sure there’ll be more of those instances this year, as the Holt Festival returns from Sat 20th – Sat 27th July. Tis year’s big names on the bill are comedian Rich Hall, Scottish peddlars Te Proclaimers, wunder-speaker, Germaine Greer and John Major, yes he of grey Britain years. Tere’s some acts worth a closer look further down the bill, as intriguing circus stars and dance delights make up must-see parts of the programme. For full details, go to www.holtfestival.org
