Turf Side Up TURF SIDE UP!

The not so serious side of the industry Gary’s few choice words ...

Meeting a legend ...

IT’S not often one gets the opportunity to stand next to a living legend. So, when the opportunity arose during the official opening of the new pavilion at Fordhouses Cricket Club in the West Midlands, photographic evidence was required to validate the story.

We’ve no idea who the bloke on the right is though!

Unrequited love...

GROUNDSMEN Richard Barnett and Andrew Muir took photobombing to a whole new level during the wedding photographs being taken on the pitch at Shrewsbury Town.

Sam and Sarah’s [surname not known] special moments were interrupted as Richard continued his marking out, whilst Andrew entered stage left and exited stage right to complete the happy couple’s special day.

The moment, caught on video by one of the guests, ended up on YouTube where, to date, it has received only 235 views - but just wait until

Bashleyed!

TWENTY-ONE year old paceman, Jake Lilley, knocked out three of his dad’s teeth during a Southern Electric Premier League clash between Bashley and Fairoak.

Father Shaun was keeping wicket and crept closer to the stumps as the ball “wasn’t carrying”. When one delivery spat off the surface, it caught Shaun square in the mouth.

“Jake kept apologising,” said Shaun, “but, in between spitting blood and teeth everywhere, I told him not be daft as it was my fault.”

144 PC JUNE/JULY 2013

Jake said; “I didn’t realise what had happened until I saw him picking his teeth up off the floor!”

THE voice of Bath head coach Gary Gold is being used to scare away a flock of birds that have taken residence at the Recreation Ground.

The club’s groundsmen had stripped away last season’s surface and sown grass seed, only for the birds to descend onto the pitch for a free feast.

In an attempt to deter them, South African Gary recorded a warning message to be played over the tannoy.

“It worked a treat,” said head groundsman Darren Ball. “We’ll keep on using it as long as the birds stay hungry.”

A club spokeswoman added:

“Anyone who has witnessed Gary’s intensity first hand will know that, when he tells you what he wants, you are left in no doubt.”

“And, whilst the message isn’t necessarily suitable for print, our feathered intruders seem to be getting the picture!”

Life in the grass lane! Harry Hill gets wind of it!

Of course, it would be a toss up as to who is more in love; Sam and Sarah with each other or Richard and Andrew with their pitch!

AT THE time of going to press, Honda engineers were racing to build the world’s fastest lawnmower after being put up to the task by Top Gear Magazine.

They are targeting a speed of 130mph. That would easily beat the current record of 96.5mph claimed by the fuel additive firm, Gold Eagle.

Honda said it had taken on the project to promote its “sporty credentials”.

“The main engineering challenge stems from the need to retain the look of the lawnmower on which it is based, and the ability to still cut grass while achieving the speed and the handling characteristics required for this type of vehicle,” said Peter Crolla, team manager at Team Dynamics - Honda’s UK motor racing team partner - which is overseeing the project.

“To our knowledge, this has never been done before, certainly using this mower and engineer combination and, as such, there are no

previous learnings to draw upon.”

The Japanese carmaker has upgraded one of its mowers by replacing its engine with one normally used in motorcycles.

A steering rack sourced from a Morris Minor has been fitted to offer greater control, the mower’s seat has been lowered, the wheels and tyres have been substituted with those of a quad bike, and the metal part of the chassis that normally holds the blades has been replaced with a glass fibre equivalent to make it lighter.

The team believes that, when complete, the machine should be able to accelerate from 0-60mph in about four seconds.
