Thurnham Parish News
Low crime rate in parish
Meetings normally held on the third Monday of each month at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel. Public welcome.
CHAIRMAN:Daniel Skinner CLERK: Sherrie Babington 01634 867173
Parish funds hit CHAIRMAN Daniel Skinner re- vealed the money the council would receive from Maidstone Council this year had reduced “very significantly” from £5,460 to £150, thanks to the phasing out of the concurrent functions grant.
Future of church PARISH councillors and the Archdeacon of Maidstone will meet with a representative from a church in Cornwall in June to get advice on how St Mary’s Church could be run by volun- teer trustees, in the absence of a parochial church council.
Play area upgrade CLLR Smith said a contractor had indicated about £10,000 to extend the play area in Aver- enches Road. He said hewould get another two
estimates.Mem- bers agreed to consult the pub- lic before deciding on buying the land and carrying out works.
PCSO Jim Stevens said only a small number of crimes had been reported from March 17 to May 16. He said parts had been taken from vehicles in Coltsfoot Drive, Fulbert Drive and Betony Gardens, and a bicycle had been taken from Thurnham Lane after its owner chained it to a fence. A property had been broken into in Crismill Lane. He said there were currently no witnesses to any of the crimes. Mr Stevens advised people to use SmartWater, which contains forensic codes that can be registered to individual postcodes, to protect their property and lock and alarm garden sheds. Signs warning criminals that property ismarkedwith SmartWater are also available, he said. He advised people to call 101 if they saw anyone acting suspi- ciously or 999 if a crimewas in progress or anyone was in danger. Mr Stevens said: “Any crime is too much crime, but the rates in Thurnham are very, very low.”
AFTER initially saying he would only be chairman for a year, Cllr Daniel Skinner (left) has agreed to another term after his colleagues unanimously voted for him. Vice- chairman Cllr Richard Smith was also re-elected.
Trees for planting TREES are to be planted on Av- erenches Road in October to re- place ones that either died or were vandalised. Cllr Smith spoke to staff at Rumwood Nurseries on Sutton Road and said he could buy 10 to 15 trees and supporting stakes for £650.
Path diversion THE parish council reluctantly removed its objection to the re- routing of a footpath around a field offWater Lane. Neither KCC nor the Ram-
blers’ Association had objected to the plan to divert the public right of way by about 50 metres and the council felt its objec- tion would not be successful. Cllr Richard Smith was con- cerned that if a small rerouting was allowed the application could be for a bigger diversion. Members said the diversion would benefit the landowner, and not the general public. Councillors agreed to note in their response to KCC that this in no way set a precedent for future decisions.
Heritage award ITWAS suggested that the Thurnham Heritage Award be given posthumously to Pauline Moore in recognition of her work to protect the countryside around her Bearsted home. Mrs Moore, who died in Au-
gust last year, campaigned until her death to stop development at Junction 8. She left land, between Sutton
Street and Ashford Road, to the BearstedWoodland Trust when she died, so it would not fall into the hands of developers. Councillors agreed to contact
one of her relatives to discuss honouring her with the award.
