• Shoosmiths’ Philip Ryan (pictured) and Tom Wilde have been made up to partner and senior associate, respectively. Regulatory specialist Ryan and tax specialist Wilde are joined in the national law firm’s 2013 round by 15 new senior associates and five partners; 22 promotions in total. The Advanced Certificate course is designed for lawyers, accountants and others in financial services.

particular, it equips those advisers to provide UK tax advice to non-UK domiciled UK resident individuals and to trustees, settlors and beneficiaries of non-UK resident trusts. The course covers many aspects of international client tax planning, from a UK perspective, including the concept of domicile; guidance on residence rules; how to identify the residence of trusts and companies; income, capital gains and inheritance tax; identifying traps and wealth preservation opportunities; and explains the potential benefits and pitfalls of offshore trusts and offshore holding companies and relevant tax consequences.


• The Thames Valley office of national tax, audit and advisory firm Crowe Clark Whitehill has swelled the ranks of its partnership, with two new partners promoted on April 1. The new partners, Phil Smithyes and Janette Joyce, have been promoted from within the firm, each bringing a specialist skill set to the partnership. Smithyes, who has been with Crowe Clark Whitehill since 2008, leads its financial planning service. Smithyes has over 25 years experience in the financial services sector, and holds responsibility for the financial planning team across the firm’s London, Reading and Cheltenham offices. Joyce joined Crowe Clark Whitehill in1996 and is now an audit partner in the firm’s not-for-profit group, based in the Thames Valley office. She specialises in providing audit, accounting and advisory services for local and national not-for-profit entities, including schools, student unions and other membership organisations. Thames Valley managing partner Ian Dale said: “Phil and Janette have both worked in the Thames Valley office for many years, and are familiar and valued faces for our clients. Phil’s commitment to helping clients to strategically plan their financial future, and Janette’s depth of knowledge in the not- for-profit sector are great assets to our office. • Williams Grand Prix Holdings plc has announced that Claire Williams is to become the deputy team principal of the Williams F1 Team. This newly created position will see her work alongside founder and team principal Sir Frank Williams to play a pivotal role in the day-to-day running and long term development of the race team. The position will strengthen the future of the team and create a clear succession path for Williams. Claire Williams will take up her new position with immediate effect, while also retaining her commercial director role leading the marketing, communications and sponsorship functions of the business. She will continue to be part of the company’s board of directors.


• Reading-based Vale & West has announced fresh staff appointments to meet future growth plans. A strategic consolidation of professional skills within Vale & West and renewed focus on growth has led to Jason Pyke heading up the firm and existing partners Lee Gardner and Kathryn Cutts investing as equity partners. Peter Ringrow, who stepped down as senior partner at the end of 2012 having joined the firm in 2000, has taken on a consultancy role. Additional private clients and increased work, particularly within the SME sector, has brought the recruitment of Valery Blakemore (pictured top) to assist with taxation matters. Yvonne Field (pictured above, second) is now tackling increased payroll requirements, driven by the HMRC’s introduction of RTI. Vale & West’s audit and accounts team has been bolstered in recent months by the appointments of Mehr Qureshi and accounts seniors John Burrows and Alex Bremner. The firm has now increased to 22 client-facing staff.
