Teen charity to benefit from music festival

MUSIC On The Hill has a new charity partner for 2013, Teens Unite Fighting Cancer. The successful event in 2011

raised more than £60,000 to provide two community nurses for Demelza Hospice and funds for a self-care workshop pro- gramme initiated by The Chil- dren’s Development Trust. This year, organisers invited Teens Unite to be a beneficiary, as 40% of the charity’s teenagers are based in Kent. Funds from the festival will

go towards the establishment of a new respite centre in the county, following the opening of the first centre in Hertford- shire last year. Teens Unite works with teenagers suffering with and re- covering from cancer and other life-limited or threatening con- ditions, through support and ac- tivities andworkshops aimed at restoring their confidence and self-esteem. Some of the teenagers from

Teens Unite are working on the design of the VIP area, with Karen Millen OBE, one of the joint founders of the charity. As many as six teenagers a

day are diagnosed with cancer in the UK, and Teens Unite pro- vides a respite service and sup- port during the difficult transition stage from child to

adult care services, as well as running days out and events. Organisers report strong tick-

ets sales following the launch of the event in early March, adding that every single ticket sold contributes towards chang- ing the lives of the children and young people that the charities work with. A number of local companies have come forward as sponsors, but offers of help, either financially or through equipment or services are all gratefully received. Plans for the event include

two huge covers that will pro- vide shelter in case of inclement

Sunday line-up, whilst a county-wide contest will be launched soon for schools to enter an act to play live as part of the festival. Event director, Colin Thacker,

said: “The response from the local community has been fan- tastic, with a lot of interest from companies and individuals. This is such an easyway to help these organisations – just buy a ticket and turn up. “We are not asking you to run a marathon or swim the English Channel and even if the music is not to your taste, come and show your support. It’s a lot cheaper than going into London!” “We also understand that

or very warm weather, and free parking will be available. Since the launch, organisers

have added top 10 artist Charlie Brown to the line-up, with The Vamps and former Busted mem- ber James Bourne confirmed as supporting McFly. Peter Andre headlines in the evening. The Crystal Girls cheerlead- ers also join the Family Summer

some people will hold off buy- ing tickets until nearer the date. However, the coverswe are pro- viding will make a big differ- ence to those concerned about the weather. That said, it rained during the Katherine Jenkins performance in 2011 and no- body cared! “There are other events in the

region this summer, so we know that people have a choice. We just want them to choose one that counts. At Music on the Hill, 100% of the profits go to the charities; it’s as simple as that.” Full details of the line-up,

times and tickets are available at www.musiconthehill.org.uk.
