Plan for new

village store TESTON villagers will soon have their own village store again, after losing their general store and post office last year. The new shop will be housed

in a large temporary cabin whichwill be set up next to the village hall in June. Planning permission has been granted by Maidstone Council. Parish councillors will be the directors of the non-profit mak- ing Teston Village Stores, which will sell groceries, milk, bread, confectionery, newspa- pers and household goods. It is hoped that Post Office services can also be provided. The village’s only store and

post office closed and was put up for sale following the death of John Zygnant (66), who had run it for 21 years. If the site is bought by some-

one who re-opens it as a shop, the cabin would be closed.

Mud no obstacle STAFF at an Aylesford holiday firm took part in an Army ob- stacle race to raise almost £2,000 for KentAir Ambulance. The team from James Villa Holidays tackled the 10km The Major Series, at Eridge Park. The company has chosen

Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Am- bulance as its Charity of the Year, and raised £1,826 throughout the year.

Tories hang on to KCC control

THE Conservative stronghold of Kent remained blue – if not quite so true – after polling day in May. Tories lost 29 seats, but re- tained overall control after hanging on to 45 of the 84 seats. A significant factor was the

rise of UKIP who took 17 seats, having held none previously, to become the second largest group at County Hall. Labour gained 11 seats but lost one, to finish with 13, and the Liberal Democrats gained one and lost one, finishing with seven. The Green party also won a seat on the council. There was no change in Malling, with three of the four wards remaining loyal to the Tories and the county council’s LibDem leader Trudy Dean storming home on a huge per- sonal vote. County Cllr Dean (pictured), who has been a member for 20

years, held on to her Malling Cen- tral seat with 55% of the vote. How- ever, Lib- Dems fared badly else- where in Malling, with a reduced number of votes. Snodland Town Cllr Paul Hickmott failed to gain Malling North from Conservative Sarah Hohler, who held on to her seat. Conservative Matthew Bal-

four, already a borough council- lor, was successful in winning a county seat, and his Tory col- league on the borough council, Peter Homewood, was also re- turned safely to his county seat. Results were: Malling Central Trudy Dean (LibDem)* 2209, Russ Taylor (Con) 793, Peter
