DRIVING THE INDUSTRY SINCE 1991
NEW FACILITY, NEW COMPANY NAME
School Transportation Management Redefi ning
Weeks after breaking ground in April on a $1.5 million, 10,000-square-foot foam tech lab in Conover, N.C., HSM was announced as the new name of Hickory Springs Manufacturing Company. The move spreads the message of “One Company, On the Move, Together” to customers after the acquisition of school bus seat manufacturer The C.E. White Company in January. HSM Transportation Solutions is one of four business units and includes C.E. White and Triad Fabco. Meanwhile, the new foam facility will improve the company’s ability to formulate foams, and supports its transition from a components supplier to a global manufacturer of integrated solutions and components.

PROPOSED SENATE BILL WOULD INCREASE HOMELESS TRANSPORTATION FUNDING
Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) re-introduced legislation in
April that would make transportation services for low-income students to the school of origin and related child services allowable uses of Title I, Part A funds. Tis is the second go-round of S. 833, the Educational
Success for Children and Youth Without Homes Act of 2013. Murray introduced the bill last year but it failed to leave committee. If passed this year, it would for the first time make homeless transportation services eligible for these funds that are earmarked for “academic enrichment services. Te Act would also increase the funding level for Title I,
Part A to assist with the costs of transporting students to their school of origin, as is required under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act, subtitle B of title VII. Homeless education expert Barbara Duffield said the Title
I provision is "a critical step" to allow schools to use their homeless alottment to provide stable environments for these students by transporting them to and from school.
