ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10, how happy are you at this moment?

D

o you float from day to day buffeted by the winds of family and social obligations without giving thought

to what makes you happy? Do you delay your happi- ness based on future events or items that you feel you need? “I’ll be happy when I’m done with this semester.” “I’ll be happy when I get that bonus at work.” “I’ll be happy when I have a weekend with nothing to do.” “I’ll be happy when I lose 20 pounds.” “I’ll be happy when ________.” What’s in your blank? This month’s feature article by Judith Fertig, “Life Lift:

Being Happy from the Inside Out,” addresses an age-old question: “What are the secrets to a happy life?” An “aha” moment for me was recognizing that there will always be things,

events and people in the future that I look forward to and that I expect to bring me a degree of happiness. One of the keys to the secret of happiness is having grati- tude in my heart for what I have right now. No matter what else is going on and no matter how imperfect my life is, there is a choice every moment to be happy. It sometimes helps to think of happiness by using different words: content- ment, peace, harmony. I think we tend to associate happiness with everything in our lives being aligned, seeing happiness as a by-product of this confluence of events. Think about that. Should we limit our happiness to those moments of chance? What happens to every other moment in our lives? An easy way for us to put ourselves one step closer to happiness is to think of all the people who have things worse than we do. Think of how life can change in a second with a car accident, a dire prognosis, the loss of a loved one. We don’t want to dwell on that sadness, but instead, let our hearts be lifted by the fact that we have so much! That we can walk and breathe and feel and run and smell and many of the other things we take for granted. Did you know that having a positive attitude (positivity) actually can make

you happier? “Positivity changes how your mind works,” writes Barbara Fredrick- son, Ph.D., author of Positivity. “Positivity doesn’t just change the contents of your mind, trading bad thoughts for good ones; it also changes the scope or boundaries of your mind. It widens the span of possibilities that you see.”

Let’s find the good in this moment. Enjoy!
