Festival to hit right note

AS the May Bank Holiday weekend approaches so does the biggest event in the summer calendar for Bearsted – the Music on the Green festival.

The Villager

U3A meetings RETURNING to study will be much easier for older Bearsted residents thanks to the arrival of the University of the Third Age (U3A). Cllr Trevor Smith has been the driving force behind the plan. Monthly meetings will be held at Detling Village Hall, as it can hold 190 people and parking is available. The inau- gural meeting at the hall is at 2pm on Thursday, May 30. The U3A offers new learning opportunities for people no longer in full-time employment, giving them the chance to enjoy learning for its own sake, as well as making new friends. For more information call 01622 630165 or email clerk@bearstedparish- council.gov.uk

Youth club help THERE has been a fantastic re- sponse from readers of the Downs Mail to the parish coun- cil’s appeal for youth club equipment. Offers of help are being reviewed to find the best equipment for the club, which meets at Madginford Hall on Wednesday evenings from 7- 9pm.

Repairs to lights THE parish council’s insurer has awarded the contract to re- pair lights on Church Landway to Advent Electrical, Maid- stone. In the meantime quotes are also being obtained for the repair of potholes along Church Landway and in the Church Lane car park.

Handyman role THE local handmyman and lit- ter picker, who was employed by the parish council, has handed in his resignation. The parish council is still to make a formal decision about replacing these two roles.

NETWORK Rail has advised that Water Lane will be closed for three weeks so repairs can be carried out on the railway bridge. The closure will take place from May 13 for up to three weeks.

Demelza Hospice Care For Chil- dren is set to benefit from the fes- tival as proceeds from the raffle are to be donated to the charity. It takes place on May 25 and 26 and there is a 1970s’ theme on Saturday, with Glamtabulous play- ing glam rock classics, The Choos offering soul, funk, jazz and blues and an appearance by Abba trib- ute band Dancing Queen.
