Childminder’s

care praised OFSTED inspectors who vis- ited the home of childminder Carole Swann, in Shillingheld Close, Bearsted, found a caring and loving environment where children felt safe and secure. Relationships between par-

ents and the childminder were good, and Ms Swann had plenty of information to enable her to meet the children’s indi- vidual needs. Children made good progress

in their learning because Ms Swann observed and assessed emerging developmental stages and made plans for their next steps. The childminder was found

to be professional and thor- ough, and documentation was well maintained. The care provided by Ms Swann was rated as good. In- spectors said it could not yet be rated as outstanding as children did not experience an environ- ment rich in print to develop their awareness of written text. Although they felt safe in the setting, strategies to deal with situations effectively were not always consistent.

Awards for local safety heroes

KCC COMMUNITY warden Liz Lovatt was honoured at Kent Police’s first Kent Community Safety Awards. Ms Lovatt, the community warden for Boughton Monchelsea, Chart Sutton and Loose, picked up the commu- nity safety award for working with the young and old in a range of capacities including providing safety advice, pro- moting inclusion for all ages, and keeping her communities free from fly-tipping and litter. Last year she obtained fund-

ing to pilot the Socket and See programme, which allowed her to buy a device to carry out safety checks on sockets and electrical equipment in peo- ple’s homes as well as fund some electrical works for the elderly or vulnerable. Paul Alcock, chairman of MaidSafe and the Town Centre Management team and general manager of The Mall shopping centre, was given the lifetime achievement award. The retired Premier League referee set up both the Town Centre Manage- ment team and MaidSafe, the town centre crime reduction partnership. Three years ago, after lots of hard work and lob- bying, Mr Alcock founded Urban Blue, a community bus operating in the town centre to
