Teen charity set to benefit from festival

MUSIC On The Hill has a new charity partner for 2013, Teens Unite Fighting Cancer. The successful event in 2011

raised more than £60,000 to pro- vide two community nurses for Demelza Hospice and funds for a self-careworkshop programme initiated by The Children’s De- velopment Trust. For this year’s Kings Hill event, organisers in- vited Teens Unite to be a benefi- ciary, as 40% of the charity’s teenagers are based in Kent. Funds from the festival, which

takes place at KingsHill, will go towards the establishment of a new respite centre in the county, following the opening of the first centre in Hertfordshire last year. Teens Unite works with teenagers suffering with and re- covering from cancer and other life-limited or threatening con- ditions, through support and ac- tivities and workshops aimed at restoring their confidence and self-esteem. Some of the teenagers from

Teens Unite are working on the design of the VIP area, with Karen Millen OBE, one of the joint founders of the charity. As many as six teenagers a day

are diagnosed with cancer in the UK, and Teens Unite provides a respite service and support dur- ing the difficult transition stage from child to adult care services, as well as running days out and events.

Organisers report strong tick-

ets sales following the launch of the event in early March, adding that every single ticket sold con- tributes towards changing the lives of the children and young people that the charities work with. A number of local compa- nies have come forward as spon- sors, but offers of help, either financially or through equip- ment or services are all grate- fully received. Plans for the event include

two huge covers that will pro- vide shelter in case of inclement or very warm weather, and free parking will be available. Since the launch, organisers

have added top 10 artist Charlie Brown to the line-up, with The Vamps and former Busted mem- ber James Bourne confirmed as supporting McFly. Peter Andre headlines in the evening. The CrystalGirls cheerleaders

also join the Family Summer Sunday line-up, whilst a county-wide contest will be launched soon for schools to enter an act to play live as part of the festival. Event director, Colin Thacker,

said: “The response from the local community has been fan- tastic, with a lot of interest from companies and individuals. This is such an easy way to help these organisations – just buy a ticket and turn up. “We are not asking you to run

amarathon or swim the English Channel and even if the music is not to your taste, come and show your support. It’s a lot cheaper than going into Lon- don!” “We also understand that

some people will hold off buy- ing tickets until nearer the date. However, the coverswe are pro- viding will make a big differ- ence to those concerned about the weather. That said, it rained during the Katherine Jenkins performance in 2011 and no- body cared! “There are other events in the

region this summer, sowe know that people have a choice. We just want them to choose one that counts. At Music on the Hill, 100% of the profits go to the charities; it’s as simple as that.” Full details of the line-up, times and tickets are available at www.musiconthehill.org.uk.
