£17,000 seized Training firm ‘making progress’

in car check FINANCIAL investigators have seized more than £18,000 fol- lowing a check on a vehicle in Harrietsham. Officers stopped a vehicle in

West Street, Harrietsham on February 13, and a search of the vehicle uncovered £17,000 in cash. The four men also had £5,820 in cash between them. The men were arrested on suspicion ofmoney laundering, but later released without charge. The sums of £4,300 and £200 were returned to two of the men. After the men said they did

not know who the £17,000 be- longed to, financial investiga- tors made an application before Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on March 28 for thismoney and £1,320 seized from the other two men to be forfeited. None of the men contested the appli- cation. Jackie Lowdon, financial in- vestigator at Kent Police said: “This was a significant amount of cash to be carrying around, and none of the men would pro- vide any details of where the money had come from. When we suspect money or assets have been obtained through crime, we will use the Proceeds of Crime Act to seize the money, to ensure that no one profits from criminal activity.”

A MAIDSTONE company that provides training in childcare is making improvements after re- ceiving an inadequate rating from Ofsted. Parenta, which provides a number of services including government-funded training for the childcare industry, was told in July last year that both out- comes for learners and quality of provision in its Foundation Learning programmes were in- adequate. Amonitoring report published by Ofsted in March revealed the

company, in Rocky Hill, had made “significant progress” in reducing the number of learners who leave the programme early and enabling learners to achieve their objectives. Significant progress had also

been made in terms of leader- ship and management, where “leaders and managers at all levels in the organisation, in- cluding tutors in the classroom, have made significant improve- ments to the management and day-to-day running of the pro- gramme”.

Floral art was very well sup- ported, with 21 entries, and the trophy for best exhibit waswon by Tricia White, for her land- scape exhibit Easter Celebra- tion.

Cookery and handicraftswere

well represented too, with the prize for the major cookery class going to Janet Brimacombe for her Spring Tea exhibit of four items and a decoration on an individual table. The society’s summer show is

from 1.30-4.30pm on Saturday, June 29, in the Baptist Church Halls on the corner of Knightrider Street. Admission is 50p for adults and free for children.

B D D Reasonable progress had been

made in monitoring the teach- ing and learning process, ensur- ing learners’ specific needs were met, providing learners with opportunities to visit childcare settings, and develop- ing links with outside agencies. Following last summer’s re-

port, director NickWilliams said the company was appealing the results of the Ofsted report as it claimed the assessment was based on just 1% of its work – the Foundation Learning pro- gramme.

Winning daffodils defy cold Big home plans

SOHILA Tamiz has applied to rebuild her home in the North Downs near Lenham to cater for her large family. She has applied to build a re- placement five bedroom house with swimming pool as well as a two bedroom flat for staff above two double garages within the garden area of White Cottage, Flint Lane. A supporting statement said:

“The property is in relatively poor condition and there are in- dications of structural move- ment at ground floor level within the building. It is not possible to sensibly extend the property to provide the addi- tional accommodation now sought by the family.”
