TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones
If you want to use Skype successfully on Windows 8, make sure you download the Desktop version. Otherwise, the app version only works when you are using the “front end” of Windows 8. The minute you go through to the desktop, it ceases to
function, so you miss calls and text messages being sent to you! Not very clever, but once you have found the desktop version to download and install, it will act in the way you are used to and not like the app version which comes with Win 8.
The PDF and XPS viewer in W8 is woefully bad and difficult to use even if you are very clever! Reduce your frustration by downloading Adobe Reader anyway, which does not come pre-loaded on Windows 8. Then, turn off the PDF and XS viewer for things like .jpg and .bmp in the default programs section of the Control Panel and set it to windows picture viewer, which is what we have all been using for years.
If like me, you are never quite sure when to collect one child from cricket or the other from pony riding and are
unsure of when your wife is having that night out, then try this. We use a shared electronic diary to keep each other organised. This is using a Microsoft (Livemail) account setup expressly for this purpose. It is an email account, but we do
not use that, we each have the same account on our phones and they synchronise the events we need to know of, but also, contacts and tasks, so we can be really organised if it suits us! It is free too; this is the same as the Mac iCloud system which is also very good and free.
Worried about your child having access to your payment card through their iTunes account? I was; especially as I could not see any way of removing my card details from the iTunes account once I had allowed him to purchase some music. I discovered that if you go to the iTunes account setting on the iPad or iPod, then look at the settings, you can change the payment option to “none” from visa etc. This then prevents your child from using the card details without permission and saves you a massive bill!!
