TAVISTOCK PEACE ACTION GROUP Our next meeting is on Tuesday 7th May at 7-30pm in The Friends’ Meeting House, Bedford Car Park, Tavistock. We welcome all who would like to join us.
Well known peace campaigner, Bruce Kent, was at our Tavistock street stall in April as part of his national “Time to Scrap Trident” tour, publicising the dangers and costs of the planned replacement. He spoke to many members of the public and joined us in giving out a large number of leaflets. A good number of people signed the campaign’s petition.
In April there was a protest outside RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire against the use of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles). These are increasingly used in surveillance and in war fighting and have already killed many civilians. They risk the potential for targets to be chosen without a declaration of war. There is growing concern about drones and TPAG intends to continue its campaigning against their use
We have arranged a public meeting in July with a speaker from the Voices for Creative Non-Violence UK team, who were recently in Afghanistan, linking with peace activists there. VCNV UK report that “Afghans are sick and tired of war and of living with fear and insecurity...We heard from everyone that they need jobs, education and health services for sustainable peace and justice.”

Tavistock Over Fifties Friendship Group
Tavistock Over Fifties Friendship Group (TOFFS) is now in its fifth year. Even though the Group is quite small, it has evolved over the years and members now enjoy an increasing number of activities. Organiser Yvonne Harris says, “We have a three member committee who organise day outings and even holidays, as there have been a lot of requests for these. The first of our small breaks is a weekend in Portsmouth where we will visit the harbour and HMS Victory and HMS Belfast etc. Some of the coming plans are to visit The Eden Project, a river cruise, a train trip, visits to various garden centres, museums and historic houses and gardens.”
Besides a monthly dinner, the Group now hold a weekly coffee morning at The Terrace restaurant. This is on Thursday mornings from 10.30am until noon and all previous members are welcome to come along and catch up with friends. Says Yvonne, “We have now four permanent male members who thoroughly enjoy them- selves and all the banter. New members are very welcome but there are only a few places
