in my music history and the launch party really surprised me, because of it being my first album and the reception I received. I still believe the album has a lot more places to go but there will be a few new tracks/ EP’s popping up soon.
HM: As your first full album what was it like putting ‘Beyond The Stars’ together? Aaaah! It was soo much fun but hard near to the end. I had loads of songs but little time and if it wasn’t for Stevie Mac sticking to the deadline I probably would have held the release date off for a few more months. Lol, love that guy! I was really nervous though, I wasn’t sure if most would get it… It’s quite different but the response was touching.
HM: A couple of ‘Beyond The Stars’ tracks feature skat and bebop, are you heavily influenced by the jazz styles of yester year?
Actually no, I never listened to or studied Jazz. It was only until I researched what skatting was that I linked the two. “Skatting” was just my personal form of expression.
HM: That said if you could work with any Jazz/ Soul artist from years gone by who would it be and why? Erm... There’s this guitarist I would love to work with called George Benson and I believe I’d have fun with an all time legend by name of Ella Fitzgerald!
HM: Last summer you performed at Hackney Weekender, how was that experience? Amazing! So surreal. The work that lead up to the event was
Well I love The Diner for their milkshakes, Apartment 58 for their music and relaxed vibe and Rising Tide to meet budding musicians.
so much fun, it felt like we were preparing for a tour with all the rehearsal bookings and van hire. It never kicked in until Rory called me to the stage or even when I was asked to sing ‘Beyond the Stars’ for their advert. I was half way through singing ‘Promises Medley’ when I realised where I was and how many times I had sung these songs at other venues. The thought made me almost cry onstage. The BBC are such huge supporters of my work, they were loads of help.
HM: So what’s on the roster for this summer’s festival season? There are a few in the pipeline at the moment, I’m just waiting for the final confirmation... all will be revealed soon :)
HM: So when you’re not waxing musical, how do you spend your days? To be honest its mostly music lol. I teach a youth choir at a
Gospel Outreach Ministry in Muswell Hill as a means to keep me sharp, but at the moment my main focus is getting myself out there and into as many ears as possible.
HM: As a Londoner what are your fave places to hang, eat and have a bevvy? Lol a bevvy.. Well I love The Diner for their milkshakes, Apartment 58 for their music and relaxed vibe and Rising Tide to meet budding musicians.
HM: Lastly Miss Kersha Bailey, what makes you HOT? lol oooh I say! Erm I don’t know lol erm....“the stage lights.”
