16 INTERVIEW Hot ones to watch

Hot one

to watch Kersha Bailey

This month’s Hot One To Watch is a lady who we think is fast on the rise to becoming the voice of London, heck UK! This talented voice is unique and original and as we both agreed will now be dubbed, a folksy jazz artist. You may have experienced her at Lovebox, Rise Festival or last year’s Hackney Weekender. She’s also graced some of London’s iconic performance spaces including Royal Albert Hall and Jazz Café. But if not then London town please meet Miss Kersha Bailey!!

HM: Hi Kersha, introduce yourself to London town Hey! I’m Kersha Bailey and I’m a singing songwriter.

HM: Talking of London, what sides are you reppin’? Haha North London - Tottenham.

HM: You’re a self-taught guitarist, how exactly does one self teach themselves to play the guitar? I didn’t even see it as teaching myself you know lol, I just wanted to play what I could hear. I would record the melodies and find chords for them, humming each note until I found them on the fretboard. The more I practised, the faster I found what I was looking for.

HM: Aside from being a kick ass self taught guitarist you’re a gifted songwriter and vocalist, what inspires your work and how do you go about finessing your sound and

technique? Aww thanks :). Well I love experimenting and hate being locked into a box. So I guess that’s what helped me expand as an artist. I’m inspired by life, love, pain and new music. Understanding the way music works and adapting special moments in my own music.

HM: Listening to your discography I’d describe it as folksy jazz, a blend of Corinne Bailey Rae and Jill Scott would you call that accurate? Yeahh that sounds quite nice actually lol, I might have to use that! I really believe my sound is acoustically lead but I love so many sounds and try to fuse them. So I find it hard to put a name to my sound.

HM: Your last release was the 2012 album ‘Beyond The Stars’ can we expect new music anytime soon? Yep you sure can! ‘Beyond the Stars’ was a proud moment
