Interior & environmental design (I&ED) offers exciting opportunities to explore a wide range of spatial contexts from adaptive reuse and the recycling of redundant architectural sites, to temporary environments such as exhibition design, pop-ups and performative spaces. Other areas of enquiry include dwelling, retail experiences and future working scenarios. We encourage an experimental attitude toward interior contexts that is realised through the chosen careers of our graduates.


I&ED operates at the creative intersection of architecture, design, art and new media. This allows spatial investigation into scale, materiality and assembly through interventions on spaces, objects and events. This is a dynamic programme that challenges conventions in contemporary culture and offers design alternatives in interior design, furniture, exhibition and experimental spaces. You will be encouraged to develop individual insights alongside team responses to relevant social need and the community. I&ED have established creative links with industry partners that provide students the opportunity to work on live projects. Your creative design process is supported through active making and prototyping in an exciting studio and workshop environment. On your I&ED journey you will develop the ability to visualise human spatial experiences and rituals at various scales, locations and contexts. You will become an essential part of a vibrant I&ED student led organisation.


We are founding members of IE Interior Educators and our students have access to an extensive network of peers and professionals in the UK. We initiated, and are co-founders of the IFS Interiors Forum Scotland- a unique research group working closely with research colleagues in other Scottish design schools.


Students studying Interiors in Dundee will participate in GIDE, the Group for International Design Education network. This is a unique consortium of European design schools that collaborate annually on shared projects, exhibitions, conferences and international workshops around various venues in Europe. Partners include students and staff from Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Belgium, England, Netherlands and Switzerland. Interiors at Dundee have led other international collaborations and developed sustainable relationships with Interior schools in Qatar, USA and China. Students can also participate in extensive international exchanges whilst studying in I&ED.

Graduates from this unique programme have gone on to have successful careers in the UK, Australia, China, USA, New Zealand, Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, and Cyprus amongst others. Our graduates’ career pathways have led them to interior design, retail brand experience, architecture, lighting, digital architectural visualisation, exhibition, theatre set design; television, film set, computer games industry, furniture design, service design, installations, sound-scapes and teaching to name a few.

You will occupy a personal work space throughout your time in I&ED and you will be supported by a dedicated I&ED teaching team with expertise in architectural design, interiors, fine art, furniture design and making, service design and CAD.


We pride ourselves in helping our students feel part of a dynamic open studio culture where social interaction, collaboration and inter- year participation contributes to a stimulating design experience.

> Partnerships, Networks and Connections 1 and 2: Part 1 combines an international collaboration as one of seven European design schools. In Part 2 Interior students can participate in the international workshop, exhibition and conference in a European city.


> Overseas study trip (for I&ED students participation within the GIDE network provides a semester two combined study trip, workshop, exhibition, conference in partnership with 170+ students, 35 design professors in alternating European venues culminating in student work being published in a research publication)


> Alternative Futures elective study option (Research and creative practice, Design and the market, Design and international contexts: Made in China)

> Design in Action Honours Project: I&ED final year students are encouraged to pursue an independent topic within an interior, environmental and design context in consultation with I&ED staff. I&ED students are encouraged to collaboratively design the year group degree show and their individual work within that show.
