STUDY FOR AN LLM
I decided to continue my studies at Derby on the LLM in Commercial Law. The degree course was varied and interesting; I was able to enrich my law knowledge as well as choosing economics and business related modules. The lecturers were also very approachable and added a touch of humour to the course.”
Although the LLM is challenging, Katerina found it to be very rewarding.
“The course is very practical and
Katerina Georgiadou, an ambitious international student from Cyprus, completed her LL.B at the University of Derby and followed this up with an LLM Commercial Law.
She enjoyed studying at Derby so much that she is now working on her PhD.
Katerina said: “My desire to study law is firmly rooted in the fact the subject of law fascinates me so extensively. I'm intrigued by developments in law, and the way it adapts to an ever- changing society. I took the decision to study the subject when I realised that I would be suited to a law degree as I am at my best when challenged, relish the opportunity of lateral thinking and enjoy the microcosm of human relations.”
The University’s LLM and LLM Commercial Law degree programmes offer a wide ride of challenging modules. Depending on what programme you opt for these could include Business Crime, Commercial Theories, International Commercial Arbitration and Environmental Crime.
This variety appealed to Katerina. “My long term goal is to be a law lecturer so when I finished my LLB
teaches you skills which you can practice later on in your career. The LLM draws its students from varied backgrounds, including non-lawyers, but there's considerable scope for in-depth legal analysis. Non-lawyers very quickly become familiar with the idiosyncrasies of law.
“The tutors are incredibly inspiring and display considerable enthusiasm for their subjects, whilst pushing you to achieve your best.
“Through my LLM experience I've gained a broad knowledge not only in law but in other fields as well which was very beneficial for my work. I've absolutely got what I wanted from the course and it's made me more motivated to pursue a higher level of education.”
Despite a heavy workload Katerina found the time to enjoy student life in Derby, making lots of friends and experiencing what the vibrant city has to offer.
“I've combined studying with making new friends and experiencing student life in Derby. I'm an international student and it was a big step for me to leave my country, my family, my home and my friends and I was naturally feeling a bit scared. However, when I arrived in Derby I soon realised I wasn't scared anymore!
“Derby is a small and safe city and a perfect place to study. The University's International Office has also been very supportive, not only in providing help, but also in treating me as an individual and not just another student.
“I’d definitely recommend studying at Derby to my friends and family; that’s the reason why, after completing my LLB and LLM degrees here, I've decided to continue with my PhD here.”
