FOCUS ON ARCHAEOLOGY

About BU’s School of Applied Sciences

The School of Applied Sciences at Bournemouth University is a vibrant community of academics and students engaged in the application of science to research agendas in the fields of conservation ecology, biosciences, behavioural ecology, fish biology, archaeology, maritime archaeology, geography, anthropology and forensic sciences.

We are based just outside of the centre of Bournemouth at BU’s Talbot Campus; a site with excellent facilities and a diverse but close-knit community of research-active staff and students. This friendly and supportive environment will enable you to flourish.

Our mission is to educate and to deliver pioneering research projects. Over 75% of our research is recognised as internationally excellent with far-reaching impact on national and international policy, for example via the European Union and the United Nations Environment Programme.

Our interdisciplinary approach means you can gain insight into all of our taught subject areas and access the expertise available from all of our experienced academics.

This provides you with a greater understanding of how your specialism fits within – and helps to shape - the wider world and leads to a much broader perspective that will put you ahead of your competitors in the job market.

Located in the South West of England, we are uniquely positioned amongst

some of the UK’s finest natural and archaeological locations, including Stonehenge, the New Forest, Wiltshire Downs and the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This outstanding natural laboratory is used extensively in fieldwork training and will provide you with unrivalled opportunities to develop practical skills in a range of specialist areas.

Our unique setting combined with the emphasis we place on ensuring that you gain extensive practical skills will give you the professional edge.

All of our taught MSc courses start in September, but throughout the year we also offer a range of short courses and CPD units. Postgraduate research students can (by exception) start at different times in the year. For more

Archaeology at BU

We offer an exciting and challenging environment in which staff and

students are actively engaged in research and the professional realm of archaeology.

Our staff specialise in zooarchaeology, osteoarchaeology, bioarchaeology, maritime archaeology, landscape archaeology, forensic archaeology, and archaeological survey and prospection.

With their wide range of research interests, our academic staff direct and work in research projects locally, nationally and internationally across all major archaeological time periods. Recent projects in Germany, Malta, East Africa and Easter Island all involved student participation, both in the field and in post- excavation analysis.

Our archaeology staff play a leading role in research on the world-famous Stonehenge site and its surroundings, and we have our own on-going large- scale local archaeological research and training excavation, the Durotriges Project, investigating the cultural transition from the Iron Age to Roman settlement.
