Much more than a contest, the NAACP Image Awards telecast has evolved into a major programming event

rom its inception, the NAACP has been at the forefront of the struggle to ensure positive images in the entertainment industry, with the NAACP Image Awards show serving


as the nation’s premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances by people of color in the arts as well as those


individuals or groups promoting social justice. The annual awards event is an exciting, star- studded salute to the best in entertainment. Honorees, presenters and performers include American and international celebrities, as well as major political fi gures and dignitaries. There are 53 competitive categories in the fi elds of motion picture, television, music and literature. There are also several honorary awards, including the Chairman’s Award, the President’s Award, the Vanguard Award and


the Hall of Fame Award. The NAACP Image Awards telecast originally


aired in the Saturday Night Live time slot on NBC. The show has since become a major prime-time programming event. From 1996 to 2011, the Image Awards telecast was shown on FOX. Back on NBC since 2012, this year’s show will air on Friday, February 1, at 8/7C. To understand the importance of the NAACP
