EQUALITY THE CALL FOR What You Should Know About the NAACP
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the oldest, largest and strongest national civil rights organization in the United States. Its principal objective is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all citizens in this country. The NAACP is committed to achieving equality
of rights and eliminating racial prejudice among the citizens of the United States; to removing all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic process; to seeking the enactment and enforcement of federal, state and local laws securing civil rights; to informing the public; to educating persons about their constitutional rights and to taking all lawful ac- tion in the furtherance of these objectives. It has fol- lowed this course for more than 100 years, despite times of overt and violent racial hostility.
FOUNDATION The NAACP was founded in 1909 in New York City by a group of black and white citizens committed to righting social injustices. On February 12, 1909, President Lincoln’s Birthday, “the Call,” signed by 60 individuals, was issued for a National Confer- ence to discuss the plight of the Negro, then-pres- ent evils, the voicing of protests and the renewal of the struggle for civil and political liberty.
FOUNDERS Mary White Ovington, Dr. Henry Moscowitz, Oswald Garrison Villiard, William English Walling, Ida Wells- Barnett and W.E.B. DuBois led the call to renew the struggle for civil and political liberty.
STRUCTURE The NAACP is a network of more than 2,200 units covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia,
