he NAACP has a long history of persistent action aimed at eliminat-


ing prejudice in the entertain- ment industry. As the nation’s premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals and groups promoting social justice through creative endeavors, the NAACP Image Awards is an extension of those efforts, and honors entertainers and activ- ists whose accomplishments are often overlooked by the mainstream media. awards event boasts 53 com- petitive categories in the fi elds of motion picture, television, music and literature. There are also several honorary awards, and one of the most prized is the Chairman’s Award. Selected by the Chairman of the National Board of Direc- tors of the NAACP, this award is presented to individuals in special recognition of their ef- forts to utilize their profession to promote diversity and com- munity involvement. has come for National Board Chairman Roslyn M. Brock to select this year’s honoree. The recipient, whose name has not yet been revealed, will exem- plify unparalleled commitment to diversity and community. Chairman Brock has recognized outstanding achievement in honorees such as U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, who established a clinic in Alabama to help uninsured residents and received the papal honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifi ce from Pope Benedict XVI, and Media Mogul Cathy Hughes, the fi rst African American to head a publicly traded corporation. We can hardly wait for
