International News FEI LAUNCHES TRANSFORMED FEI NATIONS CUP JUMPING SERIES LAUSSANE. The FEI Nations Cup Jumping

will have a new name, following finalization of a 16 million Euro four-year sponsorship package from the Saudi Equestrian Fund. The series will now be called the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup. The sponsorship deal, worth four million Euro per through to the end of 2016, was announced at the FEI Bureau’s General Assembly meeting in Istanbul (TUR). The Bureau has given its unanimous approval for new rules for the series, completing the remodeling process initiated in April of this year. “This is a truly historic occasion”, FEI Presi-

dent HRH Princess Haya said in making the an- nouncement. “We have transformed a historic series and modernized it, without losing the fab-

ulous tradition that dates back over 100 years.” “It is really wonderful news,” she contin-

ues, “for equestrian sport and for the future of the FEI Nations Cup, now the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup. The Arabic word Furusiyya en- compasses horsemanship, equestrian skills and knowledge, as well as chivalry. It perfectly cap- tures the key elements of our wonderful sport and our unique relationship with the horse” HH Prince Faissal Bin Abdullah Bin Muham-

mad Al Saud, a former FEI Bureau member and Chairman of the Saudi Equestrian Fund board of trustees, said. “With its new format the series will allow us to spread the values of Furusiyya across the globe, underpinning our Arab heri- tage and commitment towards the growth of this

FEI CO-SPONSORS CONFERENCE ON CONCUSSION IN SPORT November 2, 2012

ZURICH. The FEI joined the International Olympic Commit-

tee for the Fourth International Consensus Conference on Concus- sion this fall. The two-day conference was sponsored by FEI, FIFA, International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the International Rugby Board (IRB). IOC President Jacques Rogge welcomed delegates representing

a variety of sports, including football, rugby, ice hockey, Ameri- can football, Australian football and boxing, as well as equestrian sports. “A presentation by Paul McCrory from Australia demonstrated

that the order of magnitude of concussions in equestrian sport is higher than the incidents in soccer and American football,” Dr Sills, a US neurologist representing the FEI, said after the confer- ence. “It illustrates the great opportunities, and the challenges, for the FEI to continue to educate athletes and to continue to improve our rules and medical oversight for competitions.” FIFA’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Jiri Dvorak said: “What

we are expecting is to develop very practical, simple, easy to use tools. With such powerful partners like the International Equestrian Federation and the IOC we can make a big impact.” “Dr Craig Ferrell, former Chair of the FEI Medical Commit-

tee, was a true visionary in recognizing how important the issue of concussion is on equestrian athletes,” Dr Sills said, “and also in making sure that we apply the same techniques and standards to the management of concussion in equestrian sport as we do to athletes in other sports.” “Concussion is common in sports, including equestrian compe-

tition,” said Peter Whitehead, Acting Chair of the FEI Medical Committee. “It is so very important that the FEI is included in a gathering of the world’s recognized experts in the field of head injuries in sport. The conference will issue up to date guidelines for

recognition and management of concussion in sport.” 22 | iJumpSports.com

noble sport worldwide.” “Nations Cup competition has been in ex-

istence for more than 100 years, and has been running as a series since 1965, so rather than scrap everything, we’ve kept what was good and remodeled the rest to make the series universal and modern.” Under the new rules for the FEI Nations

Cup™ Jumping, which were presented to the Bureau by FEI Jumping Committee Chair John Madden (USA), the world has been divided into six regions for the purpose of qualifying teams for a world Final. The six regions are Europe (Division 1 and 2), North & Central America, South America, Middle East, Asia/Australia and Africa.
