VOLUME 4 p and Bridge Map
The Bridge Map is used for identifying similarities between relationships and creating analogies. It gives students a tool for applying the process of seeing analogies. On the line to the far left students have to write the relating factor. The relating factor is the similar phrase that fits both sides of an analogy.
Using a bridge map can help to show relationships between two ideas, topics, areas, etc. On the top and bottom of the left side of the bridge write the first pair of things that have this relationship. The line of the bridge represents the relating factor that is “bridged over” from one side of the analogy to the other.
The Bridge Map helps students identify the relationships between words and as long as the relationship remains the same, the Bridge Map can be extended beyond two pair of words. When students are learning a new concept, the Bridge Map can be used to demonstrate the relationship between the new concept to a similar relationship from the students’ personal experience of knowledge.
The following example is a clear representation of the analogy using the relating factor, ‘is a type of’. In this example we relate the analogy that the Sardine ‘is a type of’ Fish, as the Soursop ‘is a type of’ Fruit as the Cabbage ‘is a type of’ Vegetable.
RF*: is a type of
sardine fish
as
