Siyamala’s question, Nick Symes had attached the following pictures


showing how a piece of writing about dolphins was developed.


He says: “This is not a creative piece of writing but a report. But in the same way as listed above, Jaron, the student has developed his final piece of writing using different thinking processes. In the second picture, Jaron lists all the research that he has undertaken about dolphins. Then he categorises that information. Finally, using the categorising exercise, he uses the thinking within each category as a framework to develop his writing – it becomes his plan and content for each paragraph.”

The ideas were grouped together and then named. Once this task was accomplished, the student has all the material he needs to complete a final piece of writing (next 2 pictures). The student then just took the information and wrote one paragraph for each branch of the Tree Map.

PAGE 1 Helping students to move from a Circle Map to a Tree Map is a critical writing skill. This student from Cumberland County, NC (USA) used a Circle Map to gather information from several sources about Dolphins. He then organised the information in a Tree Map before writing his report.

His name was written in one colour and what he already knew about Dolphins written in that colour. Then each other source was written in a corresponding colour. He then grouped his ideas into separate categories in the next Tree Map.
