Observations On A First Trip To WME Missions

I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but I did know that I was extremely excited to be given a chance to go to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to check on the WME work there. This was to include a lot of firsts for me — first time out of my comfort zone; first time out of the country; first time on a long, international flight; and most startling, the first time reality slapped me in the face with just how differently people from other areas live, both good and bad.


Sri Lanka has been an interest to WME and its sponsors since shortly after the devastating 2004 tsunami that struck that country and other coastal Indian Ocean nations. Rarely has the loss of life from a natural disaster extracted a higher toll. Of course, going there for the first time, the tsunami was prevalent in my mind. I was soon to find this beautiful island is about much more than just a disaster.


It was delightful to see the progress being made in an extraordinary work including a Bible school, pre-school, church, youth church and a girls’ home that is currently under construction. I can assure you these projects have the Lord’s handprints all over them. The churches are on fire for God. You can literally feel it in the worship. The teenagers see no need to hide as they
