New Hospitality & Catering Academy offers a taste of the future
Local businesses, dignitaries and parents were given a flavour of East Berkshire College’s new Hospitality & Catering Academy at an exclusive preview launch at Royal Windsor Racecourse in November.
Among those attending the event were Fiona Mactaggart, MP for Slough, and local businesses from across Berkshire including CH&Co, The Fat Duck, Sir Christopher Wren Hotel, The Harte & Garter Hotel and Aramark.
Guests at the launch were able to take a virtual tour of the College’s professional training facilities, which are due to open at the Langley Campus in autumn 2013, and find out about the College’s new range of courses (from professional cookery to front of house).
Caroline Fry, chief executive of CH&Co and a patron of the new academy, said: “It is fantastic that this academy has been launched and we are privileged to be involved. Chefs are vital to our business as we are a food from scratch company and we need continuing generations to take career choices in catering. If you have the passion and enthusiasm, you can go far in this industry.”
Dressed in their chef whites, the College’s first intake of catering students prepared some of the food for the launch and waited on guests. Budding chefs Layla Jones and Claire Almond even prepared some festive cupcakes for the occasion.
Student Layla Jones from Slough, who is studying on the Professional Cookery Diploma Level 2 course, was delighted to be part of the event.
“The launch was a really good experience
to have so early in the course. It taught us how to work together as a team and under pressure to get the food ready on time. I’ve always been interested in cooking and I’d like to be a head chef in a top restaurant one day, so it is great to be able to learn in professional kitchens and work at events like this.”

Catering Academy is part of the College’s £16 million investment in its Langley Campus. Helping to meet the training needs of local businesses in this thriving sector, the facility will accommodate training kitchens, a working restaurant, simulated hotel environment and conference suite. This will enable the College to deliver for the first time, full-time and part-time courses, including apprenticeships, in hospitality and catering.
Ahead of the construction of the College’s new facilities, the first intake of students are undertaking theory and practical lessons at Royal Windsor Racecourse as well as gaining valuable experience in a real working environment.
As a thriving industry both locally and nationally, the hospitality and catering sector offers a variety of career paths in hotels,
restaurants, bars and conference centres. The College’s new courses reflect this, covering a wide range of aspects including food safety, professional cookery, food and beverage service, housekeeping and front of house operations. Part-time courses are also available such as asian cookery and wine tasting.
