Ulcombe home scoops second accolade
THREE Maidstone developments have been lauded as being among the best in Kent. Two top residential projects were declared winners in the Kent Design and Development Awards, while the new EastWing of Maidstone Museum was highly commended in the public buildings section. GoldingHomes’ Rosemary Gardens, housing for the elderly in ParkWood, was declared winner in themajor res- idential section, while Hill House, off Lenham Road, Ulcombe, was awarded first place in theminor residential cat- egory.
Dance marathon TEACHERS from Invicta Gram- mar School have taken part in the Cardiff Dance Marathon to raise money for the Royal Mars- den Cancer Charity. Their efforts were in memory
of student Amanda Slann, who lost her battle against leukaemia in her last school year. Dance teacher Tanya White
and PE teacher Bev Parish completed 26.2 miles of danc- ing through Cardiff, finishing 10 hours later in Cardiff Bay. So far, they have raised almost £800, and money is still com- ing in. Anyone who would like to donate can do so at

Plan to axe tree MARK Basham has applied to fell a protected hornbeam tree at 15 Greensands,Walderslade. According to his application:
“The tree is losing an extensive amount of leaves which is wor- rying due to its proximity to the house. “The tree would cause exten-
sive damage and at worst seri- ously injure someone if it was to fall towards the house. The tree also causes extensive over- shadowing and makes the gar- den boggy after rain.” Mr Basham,who also wants to coppice a protected oak tree, has offered to replace it with a smaller tree. Maidstone Council will determine the application.
KIDS UNLIMITED Maid- stone has been short- listed for the Nursery Management Today (NMT) Nursery Design Award.

Parent Claire May said: “The nursery has helped with our son’s learn-
ing and development and the buildings are something special. Our son loves the variety he receives at the nursery.”Winnerswill be announced at the NMT Awards in London on Saturday, November 24.

The awards, jointly organised and sponsored by DHA Planning, KCC and Ward Homes, celebrated the best new buildings and developments across Kent over the past two years. It was the second major award for
the £822,000 Hill House (pictured) in Ulcombe, built by Qube Special Proj- ects, which won a coveted RIBA award earlier this year. The house was designed to reflect
the environmental sensitivities of the owner, while being contemporary in design. It is primarily timber-built and, by using recycled excavationma- terial, has a low carbon footprint.
