Lights vandalised POLICE are to step up their ac- tivity to trace vandals who tar- get the lights along Church Landway. The lights, which were a welcome addition by residents, Scouts and members of the tennis club, have once again been vandalised causing danger as well as damage. Police are investigating and
the parish council is discussing measures to prevent this hap- pening again.
Accounts approved THE parish council’s 2011/12 accounts have been approved by the external auditor from the Audit Commission.
The change of venue, for safety reasons, meant more people were able to enjoy the event, organised by the parish council and put on by Phoenix Fire- works, from Sevenoaks. Ticket sales raised more than £4,000 and feedback was excel- lent. The only grumbles were about the length of queues for food, as the smell from the bar- becue created much greater de- mand than had been anticipated. A marquee was supplied by
the Lion of Kent for the food and drink area, while steward- ing was provided byMaidstone U12 rugby club volunteers,
councillors and residents. The fireworks were set off in Church Meadow, with the per- mission of the Bearsted Wood- land Trust. Local residents were warned in advance, and were offered free tickets for the event. Cllr Barbara Dunford said: “The general view was that time was ideal, location good, with a good view for spectators, ticket purchasing online was straightforward, prices were excellent value and the display was fantastic. “Everything ran smoothly,
and the police confirmed there were no incidents or com- plaints from residents.” Cllr Dunford thanked all
those who helped out at the event and those who helped clear up afterwards, including

residents and litter-picking vol- unteers from the Jubilee Church. One resident said: “May we congratulate all involved. “We bought our tickets on-
line, which was brilliant, and allowed us speedy access, thanks to a helpful gentleman collecting people from the queue. The fireworks were amazing, we were impressed by them all and by the amount of time the display lasted.” Another said: “We thought
the fireworks were great and re- ally enjoyed the evening. “The fireworkswere very im- pressive. There was more space and a much better view than there had been from the Scouts’ enclosure, and it was safer than being penned in.”
