Eco and cost conscious are turning to wood chip boilers

keep warm, William Thomas, of Forest Renew- ables, has put his money where his mouth is and installed a wood chip boiler in the offices he shares with a building firm near South Brent. “Of all the fuels available, wood is carbon neu- tral and as such is truly remarkable. I’ve had a biomass boiler in my own home for some time and it has made such a significant difference to my heating bills that earlier this year we set up a business specializing in the supply and installa- tion of low carbon heating systems,” he says. “When we are able to show people a working

woodchip boiler in the offices, they are genuinely quite excited and fascinated by the low-emission values, high efficiency and general eco-friendli- ness not to mention the savings they can make,” he says. The property is a self-contained building on

two floors and has previously been heated using electric radiators. The cost of heating had been running at over £2000/year.

After calculating the heat requirement, a small 20kw output wood pellet stove and conventional radiators were installed. The building is used for commercial purposes so eligible for payments under the ‘Renewable Heat Incentive’ (RHI) scheme. The stove burns around five tonnes of pellets/ year at a cost of around £1,100 to give an imme- diate saving of 45% or £900 every year.

In addition to this saving, the ‘RHI’ payments will gener- ate around £1500/year, with this sum index linked to inflation

“With income from the RHI and the savings we are making on our fuel, the return on capital is over 30%. The system will be paid for in less than three and a half years,” says William. RHI payments are applicable now to commercial schemes

now. Domestic schemes will be applicable next year. Any domestic wood-fuelled boiler fitted now by an MCS reg- istered installer will be eligible to receive back dated RHI payments once the scheme starts.
