Book Review C

Something for everyone

hristmas is traditionally the time when the book publishing trade reaches a spike in its sales. There really is something

I’m just

going to give you a few ideas - for stockings, sacks and even for those who you never know what to buy. This month I make no apologies for choosing hardbacks -

Christmas is a perfect time to indulge ourselves and others - and they are reliably easy to wrap! With the dark, windy nights crime is a

favourite and Ian Rankin’s Rebus is back in Standing in Another Man’s Grave (Orion, £18.99). This is a welcome return which I’m sure will feature on many a Christmas list. Sporting biographies are everywhere and

with 2012 the year of the Olympics my choice represents the ultimate challenge: Solo: A Thousand Miles from Anywhere by Dave Clarke (Blue Dolphin Books, £14.99). The word mad just doesn’t describe it - this is the story of a man who decided to row solo across the Atlantic - and did I say this man had never rowed before! Frankly the Dart is enough of a challenge for me but as Sir Ranulph Fiennes says, ‘His story cannot fail to impress; an ordinary man doing extraordinary things... The world needs adventurers - Dave Clarke is surely one of them: you might be too.’ Inspiration for all of us - even if it is in the comfort of your armchair!

Otter Country - In Search of the Wild Otter by Miriam Darlington (Granta, £20) is a beautiful book - both inside and out - and its written by a local author. It has rightly received rave reviews and though it is primarily a nature book, it is comic and passionate with magical, mesmerising prose. She tells the story of her search around the British Isles for these elusive and much loved ‘pretzels of fur’ revealing their history and their impact on all who come across them.

In the Harbour Bookshop, Marcia

Willett won hands down as the most popular author amongst our customers. She writes prolifically, and she has a new book out for Christmas - The Sea Garden (Bantam Press, £16.99).

It’s a story of friends, family, history

and the past - and all set in Devon. It’s an engaging, undemanding read and a warm story which will counterbalance well the stresses of the festive season. Andrea’s recommendation this month is

Thrifty Style: Clever Ways to Revamp your Wardrobe by Janice Chisholm (Cico Books, £12.99). It does what it says on the tin - giving ideas to transform vintage finds

and well-worn clothes into fashion-forward pieces.

Its the perfect Christmas solution

for anyone interested in style and vintage finds and a thrifty gift in every way as it’s a paperback too! For the little ones

I’ve plumped for a well known author who never fails to please: Pip and

Posy The Snowy Day (Nosy Crow Ltd, £7.99 ) by Axel Scheffler (of Gruffalo fame). Its a charming story for young readers (3+) about the value of sharing and it has a lovely snowy setting with wonderful illustrations. And the one I’m waiting for - or should I say my guilty

pleasure: Desert Island Discs - 70 Years of Castaways by Sean Magee (Bantam Press, £25).

It is a tome but it’s fascinating,

revealing, entertaining .. with a gem on every page....it gives you that warm, cosy, feeling we should all be getting at Christmas - and I won’t hear a bad word said about it! And finally I’m interested in knowing what or how you choose a book - word of mouth, first page, eye-catching cover or dare I say, even a book review? Let me know (email me at mark@ bythedart.co.uk) and I’ll share it with the rest of Dartmouth. Happy reading!
