Autumn 2012 ENVIRONMENT Wood burning systems

ELAINE’S Stoves & Flues, which can supply wood burning systems that qualify for Renewable Heat Incentive funding, offers stoves in all shapes and sizes - from traditional log burners to the contemporary. The showroom in

Okehampton is open Monday- Friday, 9am-5pm, and Saturday, 10am-4pm.

All the installers used by the

business are Hetas-registered. Hetas officially approves and

registers installers of solid fuel, wood and biomass domestic heating appliances. The Government-recognised body ensures that registered installers are trained and regularly assessed as competent for working on dry appliances, appliances with boilers, solid mineral, wood and biomass appliances, hot water and heating systems, and re-lining chimneys.

A wood burning stove. The organisation also

approves the appliances, fuels and services. With regard to appliances and equipment, its remit covers the testing and approval of boilers, cookers, open fires, stoves and room heaters.

Hetas publishes lists of

approved appliances, equipment and fuels and of installers,

chimney sweeps and maintenance businesses whose operatives have been trained and assessed in safety and good practice. The organisation produces the Hetas Guide which is a useful document for designers, specifiers, retailers, installers, maintainers or users of appliances and systems. It contains efficiency figures for appliances helping to determine whether a particular appliance can be installed in accordance with the Building Regulations. Meanwhile, approved retailers can offer advice and consumer leaflets on a wide range of topics.

Hetas says that in England, there are only two routes to legally install a domestic solid fuel, wood or biomass burning appliance. You can either use a

registered installer who can self- certify that the work complies

with the Building Regulations or you can apply for a building notice. It is generally simpler and cheaper to use a Hetas- registered installer. For more information on the appliances available, contact Elaine’s Stoves & Flues, Fatherford Farm, Exeter Road, Okehampton, EX20 1QQ. Tel: 01837 52244.
